Duane Gordon announced that the Middletown Community Foundation will be putting off the Crystal Apple program to next year in order to reconfigure it. Gordon announced this at the foundation’s annual meeting and awards dinner.
Since the program has been going on for almost 20 years and not many changes have been made there is a committee that will be formed. This committee will reevaluate the program and hope to return the Crystal Apple awards in 2010. The Mary Maurer Volunteer of the Year award went to Suzi Rubin.
Suzi is from Monroe and works on everything from Monroe City Council to Supports to Encourage Low-Income Families to the newsletter for Temple Beth Shalom. She has been impressed with the involvement of the community ever since she moved to Monroe in 1993.
The foundation also inaugurated two new awards. They were the I Love Middletown award, which was named after the late Middletown booster Mary Jane Palmer Nunlist, and was awarded to the “Grandpa Gang” who sets up the Light Up Middletown Display every year in Smith Park.
The first President’s Award went to Ron Ely, who is the Foundation’s first president who is credited with getting the organization off the ground in the 1980’s.
