This year the Seniors and Staff at Senior Independence Adult Day Center in Monroe decided that they would like to send gift boxes to the troops in Iraq for Christmas. A list of 1St Armored Division soldiers, who receive little or no mail, was obtained from a friend of the staff. We were given a list of 13 names, 4 of which do not regularly receive any mail. Letters were sent to families of the adult day clients, Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village staff, VFW Post 3809 Ladies Auxiliary, Middletown Senior Independence Adult Day Center, and friends. With everyone’s help enough goodies were donated to enable us to send 15 boxes, 14 to soldiers in Iraq and one to Korea (to the son of an Adult Day client). Small toys, personal care items, writing utensils, and snack items were collected and soon our shoeboxes were not big enough. We graduated to bigger “boot boxes” and still had some items left. The leftover items will be donated to a group of ladies who send boxes to the troops in Iraq throughout the year. The Senior Independence Seniors and staff packed the boxes and shipped them off in hopes they will cheer some of our soldiers and let them know we are thinking of them and appreciate what they are doing for us. Thanks to all who donated items and money for postage to make this project such a great success!!!!
