The Summit Academy of Middletown has some interest in the closed Roosevelt school building on Central Ave. Summit Academy is currently located at the corner of Marshall Road and Central Avenue. They have been at their current location for 8 years and the proposed move would allow for some room to grow.
The school serves close to 90 students suffering from High Functioning Autism, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome and related learning disorders according to their web site, summitacademies.com.
The Middletown Board of Education has held off on tearing down Roosevelt as a study is done to determine if there is a chance to reuse the building. Sam Ashworth, the President of, Citizens for Responsible Zoning, Inc, and Part-Time Executive Director of the Middletown Historical Society, has been spearheading the study. Mr. Ashworth has also applied for a grant with a Columbus-based organization to begin the second phase of the study, which will look at the cost of renovating the building.
Jim Winkleman, a spokesman for the Summit Academy told the Middletown Journal “We love Middletown. It’s been a really good school for us, we don’t want to leave, but there are more kids that need what we can provide. If we don’t grow then those kids might fall through the cracks.”
At the present time the Academy uses trailers and former church as its school, but more space is needed.
