This Thanksgiving students from Monroe Primary and Elementary collected all their pennies to help buy pies for the needy. There are a total of 160 classrooms of preschool through sixth grade students who participated. All together they raised around $1,400 for Parent Teacher Organizations of both schools first-ever Pennies 4 Pies Drive.
The change was counted at River Valley Credit Union in Middletown. They had sixty one-gallon jugs that consisted of mostly pennies but there were a couple dollar bills and other change. The collection began on October 27th and ran through November 10th.
Since the school has a pie sale every year through Market Day they get a profit based on how many pies are sold and they wanted to give some to charity. That is why the students brought in their pennies in hopes of having enough to buy pies for Abilities First. They were able to buy a total of 113 pies for various charities and Thanksgiving baskets and dinners that included 20 pies for Abilities First in Middletown.
The other local charities that they donated to were Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Landmark Apolistic Church, First Baptist Church, Interface Hospitality Network, Zion Lutheran Church, and First Christian Church of Middletown.
The two top classes that collected the most pennies were also awarded with pizza parties.
