MEMORANDUM
To: Middletown Master Plan Steering Committee From: Caleb Faux, AICP
Subject: Previous Planning Efforts Date: February 22, 2004
Some issues emerge consistently through the records of previous efforts, through the activities of this Committee and through the interview process we have conducted.
Below is a an attempt to define a few of them:
1. Middletown needs to pursue economic development to replace lost industrial employment. 2. There is a lack of adequate available sites for new economic development 3. There is a perception that effective pursuit of economic development is not happening 4. The overall image of Middletown could use improvement. a. This image is in part just a visual image, one of older housing and commercial buildings, decaying industrial buildings, cluttered signs and overgrown areas b. It is in part am image of an old industrial town c. It is in part connected with that condition of downtown
5. There is a perception that the community is divided and leadership is fractured 6. There is a perception that the City is not keeping up with the surrounding region 7. There is a sense of pessimism that is commonly expressed. 8. There is a perception that the community is set in its ways and that change is difficult.
