Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones is doing his best to keep from having to throw people out on the street in the winter due to not being able to pay there bills. Jones hopes that if he is successful there might be less that are homeless this winter. Jones has sent a letter to Governor Ted Strickland asking him to suspend forced evictions.
So far this year the Butler County sheriffs department has received requests for 500 evictions and 50 forced evictions. Jones worries that if he carries out the evictions that many evicted residents will not be able to find shelter and that this time of year something bad could happen to them.
Jones does not want to refuse court orders; he just wants to help out the people. Right now he is refusing to send their paperwork to the courts if he knows there eviction will put a family on the street with no place to live or anything to eat. The goal is to postpone the eviction until the sheriff's office can get back with the court to notify them of the families situation and arrange for alternate housing to be provided.
Jones understands the importance protecting the banks and landlords needing to be paid but he thinks that there is a better solution to than the evictions. Jones is well aware that when someone becomes evicted and they have no place to go that they not only lose their home but they lose everything.

So--why should anyone under his juridiction pay their rent or house payments? What about landlords who get stiffed and can't pay their mortgages? |
