Say “Boo” To Drugs Word Of The Day
Each morning during the week, a riddle will be read during the morning announcements, the answer to which has the word “boo” in it. Teachers will be given the riddle in class as well as answer slips. IF STUDENTS WANT TO PARTICIPATE (they do not have to), they can write the answer on an answer slip and place it in the envelope provided – place the envelope outside your door for collection by 930. A winner will be drawn from correct answers, announced at the end of the day and given a prize. Look for the riddles and answer slips in your boxes. If you can, try to screen answer submissions and remind the kids that it must have the word “boo” in it.
“I choose to……..” statements
Grades 2 – 5 will be given a poster where they can sign and then write the name of an activity that they can choose to do instead of doing drugs, which can be posted outside of the classroom. PS – 1 will be given sheets where they can write or draw an activity that they would choose to do instead of using drugs, and those can be posted outside of rooms (or thrown in the trash, whatever you prefer). PLEASE USE THIS AS AN INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY AT THE END OF THIS WEEK IF YOU’D LIKE AND FEEL FREE TO EXPAND IT INTO A WRITING PROMPT OR WHATEVER. I would like to choose a student every morning from each class to read his/her “I choose to….” statement on the morning announcements. Teachers – you can decide how you’d like to choose a student. His/her statement should simply read, “Instead of choosing to do drugs, I choose to …………….”
Monday, 10/25 – 5th grade – 1 student from each class
Tuesday, 10/26 – 3rd grade – 1 student from each class
Wednesday, 10/27 – 4th grade – 1 student from each class
Thursday, 10/28 – 2nd grade – 1 student from each class
Friday, 10/29 – 1st grade – 1 student from each class
On that morning, those students should report to the office with their statement written down before morning announcements so that we can practice.
Say “Boo” To Drugs – Ghost Poster
Each classroom will be given a large ghost cutout at the end of this week. Somewhere on that ghost, it should say “Mrs. Brewer’s Class Says “Boo” To Drugs” or “We Say “Boo” To Drugs” or whatever. Obviously, don’t write Mrs. Brewer’s name if that’s not your name………Murphy. You can decorate these HOWEVER YOU WANT. DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH THEM – YOU HAVE FULL ARTISTIC FREEDOM – cut it up, put it in a larger Halloween scene, put a face/clothes on it, whatever. Just make sure all of the kids in the room sign it somewhere. We will be hanging them in the front hallway Thursday morning, so have them done by then.
Wear Red Day – Balloon Launch
On Thursday, 10/28, we are going to have everyone wear red. Really push this, even bring in any extra red shirts you might have at home. At 2:30, we are going to walk students over to Barnitz Stadium and write the word “boo” out on the football field and see if we can get the paper to take some pictures….and take some pictures ourselves. I will have this organized so that classes are called out in order to write the word out without mass chaos. Each class will be given a balloon with an envelope – your class can write or put anything they’d like in the envelope talking about Rosa Parks, Middletown, Red Ribbon Week, whatever. The balloon launch motto will be “Good Choices Can Take You Anywhere.” Then, we’ll hope someone responds from the launch – we’ll put a US map up and label it when they do.
Friday – Staff Dress Up/Crazy Hair Day
On Friday, staff can dress up for Halloween (or have crazy hair) and we’ll have the kids have a “Crazy Hair Day.”
