On Monday, December 15th the Madison Board of Education spent the most of the time from the meeting discussing the possible text messaging ban between students and teachers and coaches. At the beginning board President Glenn Cappel was for the texting ban but after talking about it he decided he would rather someone text his child than calling them.
The texting ban came about from an incident that happened last year. The coach was was caught inappropriately texting a girl. The main concern is that it doesn't happen again. If this act would be enacted in the following year Madison will be the first area school district to forbid texting.
Tim Young the board Vice President still remaining opposed to texting. Young believes that there are many others ways in order to communicate and texting is not needed. The district is now encouraging the staff to text students via a listserv. That is a mass mailing list that eliminates the chance of one-on-one texting. As long as this is copied to an administrator when a child replies back it will copy to them also.
There are also mailing lists set up to send parents a copy of whatever is sent to their child also. This would make the parents more at ease with what is being sent to their children.
