U.S. Senator George Voinovich will be paying a visit to Middletown on Tuesday Feb.17th to tour the city and talk about the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Senator Voinovich was elected to the Senate in 1999 and when he arrives he will be meet be City Manger Judy Gilleland along with a small group of city council members and residents. The main issue will be how to use the $2.14 million federally funded money as it comes to some city issues. The Neighborhood Stabilization Program was established in 2008 to help cities such as Middletown in dealing with the foreclosure rate and falling home values. As of four months ago there were close to 900 homes in foreclosure in the city of Middletown.
The federal funded money will be used to purchase and restore close to a dozen homes for buyers at or below 120 % of the median income and another half dozen at 80%. Following the tour the Senator will be meeting with officials from Middletown, Hamilton and Butler County at the Middletown City Building.
Senator Voinovich has served Ohio for more than four decades and he says he will not seek reelection in 2010. Among those who are reportedly angling to replace Mr. Voinovich is a former Ohio congressman, Rob Portman, a Republican who served as director of the Office of Management and Budget and United States Trade Representative during the Bush administration. Although Mr. Portman has not announced his candidacy rumors are out there that he will make a strong run for the vacant seat. Other potential candidates include Ken Blackwell and Mike DeWine
