National White Cane Safety
Friday, October 15,
Celebration at Central Academy from 12:30-1:45.
Students from across the district will attend.
White Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United States, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.
Many Middletown City School students who are blind/ visually impaired use a long white cane either daily or occasionally. The Long White Cane helps our students to be independent. Our students use the cane to travel safely and effectively. It is important for Middletown as a community to be aware of the cane and understand the special care that motorists need to take when they see a white cane user. There are laws that protect a white cane user while he or she travels.
Most importantly, the message that White Cane Safety Day sends is that blind or visually impaired individuals are able to go, to move, to be, and to compete with all others in society. The means by which this is done is that simple tool, the white cane.
