Offering one week of GED fee-waivers will be the Middletown City School District's way of celebrating the first annual National Adult Education Week, September 13-17. Fee-waivers ended in August of 2009 as a result of reductions by the state legislature.
The fee-waivers will defray the $40.00 cost of taking the GED test. They are the results of a Middletown Community Foundation Grant and personal donations. Thirty five fee-waivers will be awarded to adults who pass the GED Official Practice Test.
The Official Practice test leading to the Fee-Waiver will be administered September 14 and 16, 9:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m or 6:00 p.m. 8:30 p.m at Manchester School (Door S); and 12:45 p.m. 3:45 p.m. or 6:00p.m. 8:30 p.m. at Butler Tech, room 212.
According to Rose Marie Stiehl, Adult Education Principal, " When the fee-waivers were abolished, it created a hardship. In this economy, it is almost impossible to obtain employment without a high school diploma. This is one small way to help a small number of adults reach their goal."
Last year the Middletown Adult Education Program graduated 513 adults. Morning, evening and afternoon classes are offered free at locations throughout the county at Manchester School, St. Paul's Church, Butler Tech, HeadStart Butler County Early Learning Center, Salvation Army on Pershing, and Oxford Adult Learning Center.
Adults interested in earning a fee-waiver should call the Adult Education Office to register at 420-4520.
