Mount Pleasant Retirement Village residents are voicing their opinion when it comes to the SunCoke plant in Middletown. The Coke Plant which began construction in January of 2009 was scheduled to take an 12 to 18 months to complete. AK Steel had agreed to buy the entire output of its nearby Middletown Works over the next 20 years.
This was the plan before a motion was filed by the city of Monroe to stop the plant from building. Monroe has spent close to $250,000 of tax payer’s money to stop the Tennessee based company from completing the $340 million plant. Stoppage of work at the SunCoke plant will cost Middletown and the surrounding area close to 500 jobs.
These workers would have had full time employment by this summer, some making $40 an hour with complete benefits.
Not all residents at the Mount Pleasant Retirement Village agree with the city’s efforts to stop the coke plant and believe there are better things Monroe could be spending this money on. One resident went as far as to put together a petition asking the city to drop the lawsuit and allow the coke plant to continue construction. The petition was signed by 136 people from the city of Monroe.
A large number of those signatures were from the residents at the retirement village. Most of whom are retired workers from AK Steel. The petition asking the city to stop the fight was presented to the Mayor and council member’s at the most recent council meeting.
Monroe’s Mayor Routson told the Middletown journal that “The petition won’t stop the city from moving forward with its fight against SunCoke.” He went on to say “We are going to continue the process that we’re doing at this time. We’re not going to change anything just based on that petition.”
