Starting next month if Middletown City Council approves the proposal for a new vendor to take over Middletown’s red-light camera operation it would go into affect next month. The top bid so far for the red-light photo enforcement program is Redflex Traffic Systems of Phoenix, Arizona. The bids were opened on November 6th.
Maryland-based Traffipax Inc. is the current vendor and they did not rebid for the contract. The city officials had not been happy with this company since 2007. There had been a decrease in citations and revenues. One of the cameras had also not been working for several months.
Traffipax had originally been awarded the contract to install and operate eight red light cameras in April of 2005. Revenues had decreased by more than half from January 1st through October 31st. The city officials believe that the program improves the safety on city streets.
Part of the new program would be to audit current intersections to determine whether there is a need to change the locations of the cameras in the city. They city may also increase the number of cameras but that depends on the intersection audit.
