by Susan BeagleEnrollment has been declining for at least 8 years in MCS. There was a dramatic drop of 17.4% enrollment in 2000 due to the separation of Monroe students to the formation of their own school district. Over the next 7 years enrollment declined an additional 17.3%. In the 2005/06 and 2006/07 school years there was a decrease in the decline but when the operational levy failed in 2007 there was another sharp drop in kindergarten enrollment. There was a drop in the enrollment in 2007/08 due to two factors: low birth rate at Middletown Regional Hospital in 2002 and the loss of the operational levy. The current capacity of elementary schools in MCS is 3888 which is 650 less than the projected enrollment in 2012/13 when the enrollment numbers are expected to level out.

Building larger schools to replace the existing ones for fewer students doesn't make sense and is a waste of bond money. Please justify your decision to the public taxpayer. These are "Ferrari" schools for a "Chevrolet" town. | 9/2/2008 11:41:32 PM | Bill A | It appears the school board was very creative to have new schools built. Is it really possible they did not have projections to future student populations given all the information with current enrollment in the lower grades.
This situation appears quite interesting. |
