Parents whose children receive monthly books from the Middletown chapter of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library now have a new resource to help them get more out of their books.
The program’s primary local sponsor, the Middletown Community Foundation, has debuted a special section of its website dedicated to the program at www.mcfoundation.org/library.
The highlight of this special website is an activity sheet section updated each month to alert parents of what book will be shipped to their child’s age group and provide a PDF activity sheet that may be printed to provide games, songs and other fun and educational projects related to that specific book. An archive of activity sheets for books that children received earlier this year is also provided.
“We want to encourage parents to do more than simply read to their children when they receive books from us,” explained Middletown Community Foundation Executive Director T. Duane Gordon. “We want to provide you a gateway to explore your child’s world of imagination – and your own imagination, too! This means talking about the illustrations, making up songs about the characters or coming up with little art projects you can do at home about the book. This is precious time to spend with your child as he or she develops in these early years, and we want to help you make the most of it.” Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library provides one free, age-appropriate, expert-selected book delivered every month to the home of any child under the age of 5 in a participating community. Presently, about 700 Middletown children are participating in the program, and parents may register online at www.mcfoundation.org/library or by picking up a registration form and returning it to the Middletown Community Foundation.
Books delivered for August are “A Place Called Kindergarten” for children born in 2004, “Take Care, Good Knight” for those born in 2005, “The Gruffalo” for 2006, “Pip & Squeak” for 2007, “Ready, Set, Skip” for 2008 and “Skippy Jon Jones: Up and Down” for those born so far in 2009. The first book each child receives after enrollment, regardless of age, is the classic “The Little Engine That Could.”
