| Middletown Atrium’s 9th Diabetes Wellness Fair |

Atrium Medical Center’s Diabetes Wellness Center will host its ninth-annual Diabetes Wellness Fair on Tuesday, November 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The wellness fair, which coincides with American Diabetes Month, will be held on the fifth floor of the Professional Building (attached to Atrium Medical Center) and is free and open to the public. It is made possible by generous contributions to the Atrium Medical Center Foundation’s Diabetes Community Outreach Program.
Blood sugar, blood pressure and other screenings will be offered. The free fingerstick blood sugar screenings are made possible by a generous donation from Bayer Diabetes Care. Fasting is not required.
Many door prizes will be given away, and representatives from various Atrium departments will be on hand to discuss health information. Several organizations and companies specializing in diabetes care will be available to showcase their services and products.
Among those scheduled to be at the fair include:
* Abbott Diabetes Care, Bayer Diabetes Care, Lifescan, Roche-information on home glucose meters
* American Diabetes Association
* United Way of Greater Cincinnati-Middletown Area
* Medtronic MiniMed – information on insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices
* Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired – information on adaptive devices for the visually impaired
* Automated Health Services – information on Medicaid Managed Care and enrollment services
“We encourage everyone to stop by anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.,” says Carolyn Fogarty, manager of the Diabetes Wellness Center. “Everyone can benefit from information available at the fair, not just those with diabetes.”
Because a number of other diseases are more visible or are discussed more frequently, diabetes has remained a “slient killer” through the years, according to Fogarty. The disease affects approximately 23.6 million Americans, roughly equal to the combined populations of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Of those 23.6 million, more than 5.7 million are undiagnosed.
“In Butler and Warren counties alone, there are more than 38,000 residents with diabetes,” explains Fogarty. “Nationally, a staggering 57 million people have pre-diabetes. These are the people who could prevent diabetes through education, exercise and healthy eating.”
