Miami of Oxford under the direction of Chris Tanner brought their Steel Band to the sister campus here in Middletown on Oct 23, 2009. Many local schools made up the audience filling Dave Finkleman Auditorium. The hour long concert – free and open to the public - was a delight for any age group.
Director Tanner gave us the history of the music and instruments which originated in Trinidad in the 1920’s. Originally the steel band was made up of discarded oil drums and car parts to create new music for the celebration of Carnival. Now the instruments – many in the same physical shape - have never seen a drop of oil. Audience participation really picked up spirits on a very rainy day but even without it the Caribbean style music would make one smile.
