On Saturday, May 30th, The Middletown Cemetery was given a much needed sprucing up. The cemetery is located on First Avenue in Middletown and Vivian Moon, a local citizen that volunteers her time at the cemetery almost daily, invited me out to see just what was going on that day.
Mrs. Moon use to ride her bike through the cemetery as a child and has been doing work there since 2005. She told me that she spends close to $1,500 a year of her own money to try and keep the cemetery looking nice. Mrs. Moon has been involved in an on going battle with the city over the care given to the cemetery or lack of care in her opinion.
But on this day there was no talk of the city doing or not doing their part, instead it was all about the group of guys that showed up to donate their time. Workers from Cohen Brothers Inc., a local business located not far from the cemetery, volunteered their time and equipment to help in the cleaning up of the pioneer cemetery historic Middletown Landmark. Cohen Brothers, Inc. is one of the largest ferrous and non-ferrous scrap processing companies in the United States.
When I arrived just after 9 a.m. on Saturday morning I was greeted by Ken Cohen (part owner of Cohen Brothers Inc.) and I asked what made them decide to come out today? He said, "We have been members of the community for years and [saw] things needed done. I put a list up asking for some guys to help out, and when I saw there were plenty of volunteers I contacted the city and signed up for the job."
I spoke with some of the guys from Cohen Brothers, INC and the feeling was the same from each of them: "we are glad to come out and help.”
The Middletown Cemetery opened on May 30th,1827 and is home to Middletown's founding fathers as well as the first mayor. And if you have ever wondered where streets like Sutphin, Tytus and Lefferson got their names from, all you have to do is drive through Middletown's oldest cemetery to see the resting places of their namesakes.
Talk from City Officials about demolishing the vault at the Cemetery has lead to a heated debate and possible law suites from citizens. The final word has yet to be given on this subject but we will keep you posted as more information becomes available.
