Light Up Middletown Display Hits the Ground
By: Ann Mort
Light Up Middletown will remain open through New Year's Eve from 6 pm to 10 pm each evening. Animated light displays will continue to entertain those who drive through Smith Park in downtown Middletown. However, the huge 138 foot long by 27 foot high Santa's Workshop display closed early. Due to the rainy weather and high winds, the animated display fell on Wednesday and wil not be a part of the display for the rest of the season.
According to site manager Barney Strassburger, the 16 sections of the display dislodged their many anchors and in the process bent some of the structure. The Grandpa Gang who maintain the displays will repair the damage for next year and rig even more sturdy anchorsfor the display. "It seems that Santa decided to close the workshop early this year" said Strassburger.
So far in 2008 over 36,000 people in 12,000 vehicles have toured the display. The Light Up Middletown display is supported by cash donations given by those who visit during the season. Donations are used to maintain and expand the display as well as make the park improvements.
