In his State of the State address, Gov. Kasich reported that job opportunities in Ohio are on the rise. The unemployment rate hit 8.1 percent at the end of 2011, which is a decrease from 9.5 percent in 2010. Companies such as Honda, Chrysler and US Steel are planning major investments that include hiring plans, and the state’s sales and income tax revenues are ahead of projections.
Kasich warns, however, that Ohio is not completely out of the woods and that the next logistical hurdle is in education. The governor argued that the state needs to rethink public education so that it is better oriented toward the types of jobs now on the rise. In his speech he called for universities to work toward increasing graduation rates and commercializing research, and asked community colleges to align their training programs with available jobs, so that capable individuals are trained to fill them.
