Joseph Barger who is a World War II veteran has yet to receive his high school diploma. All of that is about to change for him here soon. Barger who is now 86 years old went to Franklin High School to vote where he met the Principal David Riegel when he was waiting in line.
Barger will be receiving his honorary diploma. He will be receiving his diploma thanks to an Ohio law that allows public schools to grant a diploma to veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. It will almost be 70 years since Barger dropped out of high school and was drafted into the military before he gets his diploma.
Joseph Barger served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945 as a surgical technician. Most of his time he spent in the Philippines. At times he thought of continuing his education while he was working at Jefferson Smurfit, which is a paper mill in Middletown. He would sometimes work 12 hour shifts for seven days a week.
Barger said that with his diploma he will be a little more proud at his grandchildren’s graduations.
