John Rabenold Supports Small Businesses in Ohio's 35th District |
Monday, January 28, 2008 11:27:41 AM - Middletown Ohio |
by John Beagle
I asked all three candidates* for Ohio's 35th House District to participate in a question and answer session. John Rabenold was first to respond.
Beagle: Give me an example or two of how you will be a pro-business state representative form business. Especially SMBs.
Rabenold: As a legislator, I am committed to improving the climate for businesses. For example, reform is needed within the Bureau of Workers Compensation, specifically regarding the attack on premium discounts earned by employers who participate in group-rating programs. Employers operating safe work places used to qualify for a 95% discount. The discount has been reduced to 85% resulting in a significant expense increase. Further reductions must be stopped. While on the topic of BWC, we need to improve the Reserves system by making it less capital intensive and less onerous on the employer. These Reserves are an attractive target for the trial lawyers. And the culture of state government must be changed, free market principles embraced, and onerous laws and regulations removed. For the region to be successful, businesses must prosper, which brings better pricing & services for consumers; better wages & benefits for employees; resulting in increased earnings for owners, investors & shareholders. Everyone wins, including state and local governments.
Beagle: It says you are anti-tax on your website. Are all taxes bad or are there some good taxes?
Rabenold: While taxes are needed to fund basic government services, excessive taxation makes Ohio less competitive in today's global economy. A goal of mine is to ensure that Ohio government lives on a reasonable budget, just as our families must do, and we must return more money to the Ohio taxpayer and let them decide when and where to best invest their wages. Rather than raise taxes, we need to identify agencies, programs and services to more efficiently operate, privatize or eliminate altogether.
Beagle: Tell us about your faith, you mentioned that you are active in your church.
Rabenold: I am a member of the Indian Hill Episcopalian - Presbyterian Church. I currently serve on the Usher Committee and volunteer with the Church's commitment to the Inter-Faith Hospitality Network, where we provide shelter, food and hospitality to the area's temporary homeless for three weeks out of the year. Also, I've served on the Stewardship Committee and I've taught Sunday School.

2/8/2008 10:17:58 PM | Michigan State Representative John Garfield | I have personally known John Rabenold for many years. On the economy, he knows how to think forward, and "out of the box". We have spoke many times on Michigans High Business Tax, failure to lure business, and to create a pleasant business atmoshere. Traits needed to attract and retain business. He also understands and recognizes the "Global Economy", successes and failures. He understands that small business and the Private sector creat jobs, not Government. | 2/19/2008 1:32:27 AM | Concerned Citizen | Voters, By now, most folks should have already heard about Mr. Rabenold’s spotty career. Hes made a small fortune representing one of sleaziest industries in the country. Now, I’m sure hes just trying to provide the best life he can for himself and his family, but you have to call to question a man’s integrity when he is willing to be the spokesman for an seamy industry like Pay Day lending.
His old website as well as the first sentence of his first answer in THIS interview, are riddled with election law violations. He says “As a legislator, I am committed to improving the climate…” You CANNOT use the title of an office in a manner that implies that you are the current office holder. Its black and white. Rabenold either does not understand state law, or does not care to adhere to it. Either one should cause you to think twice about voting for him. -Concerned Citizen | 2/19/2008 10:00:26 AM | Another Concerned Citizen | John Rabenold works for the Check 'n Go payday-lending company. As most people know, the payday lending industry is exploitative in the way it lends money to predominantly poor people at exorbitantly high interests rates (between 300% and 500% and, in some cases, higher!). There is a movement to increase regulation of the payday lending industry in the state of Ohio. If Rabenold is elected, he will likely try to counter that legislation and further influence legislation to the advantage this insidious industry. The fox will be in the hen house, if you will. Mr. Rabenold touts a pro-business, anti-tax, family oriented campaign platform. However, his connection to the payday lending industry gets little or no mention. Voters should pay attention to this candidate and his less obvious, self-serving agenda.
| 2/19/2008 6:42:03 PM | dt | Its always funny to hear about the payday lending industry from people who dont have a clue about it.here do the math 100.00 loan now hears the key 2 week short term loan the pay back is 115.00 thats 15% on a no credit no collateral loan. The old addage think before you speak also applies to typing on the internet.John Rabenold is going to win because he's the best man for the job.Attacking a man for the business he's involved in only holds fair if you understand the business and the man and you clearly know neither.Lets pray always the best man for the job gets the job and in this case hands down it's JOHN RABENOLD | 2/21/2008 4:32:34 PM | Episcopalian | Statement by the Episcopal bishops of the Diocese of Southern Ohio regarding payday lending (website: http://www.episcopal-dso.org/)
"As we enter into the season of Lent, we are reminded that the salvation we know in Jesus Christ cannot be separated from his demand that we respond to God's mercy by caring for those who are weaker and more vulnerable than we are. This is not just about hand-outs: we are called as followers of Jesus to speak out against social practices that prey on the poor and take advantage of their poverty.
Payday lending is one such practice. Payday lenders offer loans at exorbitant interest to the working poor, offering advances on anticipated payday earnings.
Last November our diocesan convention passed Resolution R07-3 by a strong majority. This resolution calls on the General Assembly to pass laws protecting Ohio residents against unfair lending practices, and, in particular, to reduce and cap the interest rates being charged by payday lenders. In addition, the resolution explicitly affirms the work of the Ohio Coalition for Responsible Lending on this issue. The Diocese of Ohio has joined us in affirming this work. This is an issue in which the Episcopal Church can speak state-wide with one voice.
With legislation pending on this issue, we are calling on the Episcopalians of Southern Ohio to voice their opposition to these practices." | 2/28/2008 11:51:15 AM | Matthew Ayer | 391% APR and no new taxes or regulation are good if you can get it, I suppose, but please Check N Go for Ron Maag on March 4. | 3/4/2008 11:51:29 AM | Conserative Republican | Grace Kendrick is also running for State Rep. in the same district as Rabenold. She is extremely qualified but not well financed. Many of her election signs seem to disappear even when they are located in the same area as Rabenold. We think it is extremly suspicious that John's signs don't seem to disappear. | 3/4/2008 1:02:31 PM | dt | What are you saying that john has time to go yard to yard stealing signs thats so silly.Again no one wants to talk issues with John thats his strong point not smear.wakeup may the best republican win.AND WIN ON ISSUES | 3/4/2008 2:05:40 PM | DT | Im shocked to read that the episcopal bishops of the diocese of southern ohio would support the ohio coalition for responsible lending this group is a liberal left wing organization who under the name self help credit union has caused many people to be evicted and tossed out on the street not being able to pay back there loans also have taken default loan customers to court for as little as 96.00 this is all on record consumer rights league .org.this special interest group made record profits when payday lending was ran out of the state of north carolina they have an agenda in this state. Why would the diocese support these so called advocates?KNOW YOUR FRIENDS | 3/6/2008 1:33:38 PM | Closer Look | KNOW YOUR FRIENDS INDEED - Read on...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A predatory lending industry front group, the Consumers Rights League, emerged today to derail reform of reckless practices that have ensnared Americans in harmful payday loans, fostered hundreds of thousands of family foreclosures, roiled international markets, and put our country on the brink of recession.
The primary targets of this fake grassroots effort are the Center for Responsible Lending and its affiliate, Self-Help Credit Union. For the past 25 years, Self-Help has provided over $5 billion of financing to 55,000 low-wealth families, small businesses and nonprofit organizations in North Carolina and across the country, with an annual loan loss rate of less than one percent.
These attacks are nothing new. The Consumers Rights League joins the ranks of the Ku Klux Klan and drug dealers who opposed Self-Helps community development lending in poor and minority neighborhoods.
We want to set the record straight about the misinformation and distortions these predatory companies and their public relations attack firms are spreading. Please visit http://www.responsiblelending.org and see Debunking Industry Propaganda for the truth.
