A $500 check was presented to Judy Bober, chairperson of the Middletown Murals committee and Kristin Forsythe, treasurer, by Mike Stoppiello and Michael Cox of Empowered People Reaching Out. Also attending the ceremony were: Eric Henn, muralist for the project and Butler County MRDD representatives Keith Banner, quality enhancement co-ordinator and marketing representative Carol Buckner.
The $500 represents a gift made by the Empowered People Reaching Out self-advocacy group of people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. Members of the group have raised funds through the sale of wreaths and mulch, a bake sale and by working a concession stand at the Cincinnati Reds game. Group members meet to decide how they want to use the money they make through their fund-raising efforts.
Butler County MRDD works closely with the EPRO members to assist them in becoming involved in the community.
Mrs. Bober, said, “We are very pleased that Empowered People Reaching Out chose the Middletown Murals as the recipient for their donation. Their hard work to raise this money is made even more important because they are overcoming significant obstacles and taking an active role in improving the quality of life for everyone in their community.”
The donation will be used to paint a series of historic murals in outdoor Middletown locations.
The first sites selected for Middletown Murals are on the two sides of the downtown parking garage. The mural sites are on the portion which spans Broad Street, recently reopened to vehicle traffic.
To raise the needed $17,000 for those two murals, the mural committee is holding a raffle. The winner to be drawn on February 15, will be included in the first mural as a part of the historic scene. The $5 tickets are available at several retail outlets in Middletown or by calling Judy Bober at 705-4000. Donations to the project may be made to Middletown Murals, c/o Middletown Community Foundation, 36 Donham Plaza, Middletown, OH 45042. Ann Mort
