The Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council believe that the proposed SunCoke plant violates the Clean Air Act. The SunCoke facility will be located on Yankee Road and be a proposed $340 million.
According to these two groups the act may violate what the Ohio EPA allows SunCoke to use emission credits for AK Steel Corp. Since AK shut down its sinter plant at Middletown Works in June 2003 they are over five years old which makes them invalid. The permit would most likely be denied or revised.
Besides the environmental problems there is no regulation on hydrogen sulfide, total reduced sulfur or the 345 tons of particulate matter. Theses pollutants are also considered potential health hazards and controlled for the permit to be approved.
