Duke Energy will now have a new pilot program for eligible low-income natural gas customers to help them conserve energy and save money. This program will be available to customers who are at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guideline.
Along with the new program the first 10,000 Duke natural gas customers that sign up will receive a monthly credit of $4 to partially offset increases in the monthly fixed charges for natural gas. It was approved in May 2008 by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
The customers that have met the criteria and who have participated in the Home Energy Assistance Program in the past 12 months are automatically enrolled in the pilot program. After that they will be notified by letter. In order to enroll in the program the customers must complete a self-verification form.
After the first year Duke Energy will evaluate the program. Then they will consult with parties in natural gas rate proceeding to determine whether to extend the program or not. Right now Duke delivers electricity to around 690,000 electric customers and natural gas to around 425,000. These include customers from Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.
