Weekly Update to City Council
from the City Manager
July 25, 2008
Flood Insurance for homes that back up to levee
Miami
Conservancy District has informed us that a Bill is being considered by both
the House and Senate that would require
property owners in areas behind levees, dams and other man-made structures to purchase
flood insurance. At MCD’s request, I
have sent letters to our U.S. Rep and Senator asking them to vote this Bill
down if it requires insurance.
Municipal Court Security Committee
The
Municipal Court is required to appoint a Security Committee, on which the
Police Chief and I will serve. They
would also like to have a member of city council. If you have an interest in serving on this
committee, which will meet a couple of times a year, please let me know.
Chicago plan would link city
cameras to businesses, homes.
The Chicago Tribune
(7/24) reports that "Chicago's 911 center's extensive network of video
surveillance" could become much larger "under a proposal to allow
city hookups to security cameras at businesses and private homes" if the
owners agree… The city "would not continuously monitor" the private
cameras, "but could switch them on in the case of an emergency." …
The city "has the ability to accept data from 'thousands' of
cameras," the city official said. The police and fire committee of the
city council "signed off on the plan Wednesday."
Quaker Chemical
Expansion Groundbreaking
A great event held last week. Nice to see the
potential of job growth – hopefully another 45 jobs in the city!
Business Retention
Visits
Our team of community volunteers and staff
continues to visit Middletown businesses to ensure they are successful and to
inquire as to what the city can do to assist them in their endeavors. We have received very positive feedback on
these visits.
Reorganizing City Hall
As part of the re-org, we will be making some
physical office changes to better serve the public. As you know, the re-org will be effective
mid-August and staff and employees are in the process of transitioning now.
Public Safety Committee
Great meeting, we had presentations on EMS response
time and run time, increasing costs and the like; on the status of the fire
station improvements; and info on bar/night club nuisance issues.
Housing Committee
This will be a very useful committee in helping the
city shape our housing policy, both on public and private housing. An oversight committee for CDBG related
housing loans has been meeting also.
Broadband Wireless
We have had conversations and meetings about this
topic and its applicability to the downtown area and other businesses. More research to be done on how we might
accomplish this with no or very little cost to the city.
