Middletown, Ohio City Council unanimously passed a vote last night to remove the proposed income tax increase slated for the March 4 ballot. The 0.25% tax hike earmarked for road repairs and improvements was voted down 4-3 last week by the three newcomers to City Council as well as former Vice President Tony Marconi. Bill Becker, Anita Scott-Jones, Leslie Ford, and Marconi felt that this proposed increase came too close on the tails of the one just passed in November, and that a plan for usage of the money wasn't sufficiently outlined to warrant moving ahead with the vote.
Last week Mayor Larry Mulligan, Vice Mayor Jim Armbruster and former Mayor David Schiavone all voted in favor of moving forward, reasoning that the tax hike needs to be approved, if not in March, definitely in November of '08. They all changed their votes last night in the name of solidarity, but still not all of them were convinced calling off the vote was the best idea. Some councilpeople stated concerns that the issue might not be given enough consideration in the future after the vote to squash the issue.
