The Middletown, Ohio Board of Education had their annual organizational meeting last night, the first of the year with the new roster. State law requires that school boards hold an organizational meeting on or before the 15th of January with each new calendar year, and one of the organizational duties completed in this meeting is the choosing of the President and Vice President of the board for the year.
In a 3-2 vote, the Middletown School Board decided last night that Rev. Gregory Tyus will be assuming the position of President this year, and a second unanimous vote decided that Katie McNeil will serve as Vice President. Reverend Tyus was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Dr. David Kabithe in early December last year when Dr. Kabithe resigned, a term which will last until 2010. Rev. Tyus served on the board previously from 2000 to 2004.
The board members voting in favor of Rev. Tyus were himself, and the two board newcomers -- former Middletown Fire Chief John Sauter and Christopher Fiora. The two other votes, from incumbent members Katie McNeil and Marcia Andrew, were both cast in favor of McNeil.
Nobody could have predicted that Rev. Tyus would be School Board President two months ago, as he failed in his bid to be elected onto the board at all on November 6th. Rev. Tyus was one of 5 candidates for the board, and one of two that were not voted in.
