This year Abilities First has had 50 years of service to the Middletown community. In the past years many people in Middletown have participated with Abilities First and have liked it and been touched in one way or another. Many people either have children who are clients, and others work in conjunction with the agency.
Abilities First is an agency that provides services for children and adults with disabilities. They began as a Doty House which is where eight children were provided educational therapy services that were not available in public schools. Now there are over 1,200 clients served annually by an average of 115 employees in an eight county region.
They also do fundraisers and one of the more popular ones is called Touchdowns for Kids. This fundraiser allows area businesses to sponsor their town football team by pledging a dollar amount for each touchdown scored during the regular High School season. Some of the local teams that participate are Middletown, Monroe, Lakota East, Carlisle, and Franklin.
