Middletown's Offensive Play Calls

Watched the game last night. Middletown's defense did a great job but gave up too much size and eventually wore out. At times, unable to stop Colerain's running game. At times, they did stop it. The pass defense looked good.

I question the play calling on the offensive side of the ball. It was apparent, Middletown's running game had a hard time gaining one or two yards the whole game. Yet, time and time again, the offensive play called for carries up the middle, where Colerain's defense appeared to be the strongest. I saw no sweeps, I saw few option outside....most plays were contained within the O line.

What I did see is that the weakness of Colerain's defense was the defensive backfield, especially the pass defense. (You can beat Colerain with a good passing game IMO). It was basically non-existent. Middletown had two excellent pass plays from Marshall to #16 for scores. That was it. I just don't see why play after play, the play calls were for running the ball for losses or small gains and the O coordinator didn't exploit the Colerain pass coverage more. Marshall and the gang were frustrated. Middletown's passing game looked more successful than the running game. IMO, should have been used more. JMO

Good observations gemneye. Someone should mention the spread to Coach Everhart. Might give the offense an advantage using Marshall's/E.J.Junior's speed and room to run. Not as much defensive containment that way as you mentioned happened in the Colerain game. Don't understand the mentality of repeatedly running up the middle, especially when the O line is smaller than a packed in D line, when speed negates size to the outside. Time to exploit your opponent with speed Mr. Everhart. Time to get inventive and mix it up a little too. Get #16 involved more other than 25-40 yard pass plays. (flanker screens with decent blocking) Let's hurt that other team with our speed. JMO
