In a NY Post article by Kyle Smith he speaks about JD Vance and his growing up in Middletown. Here are some excerpts:

.Why ‘white trash’ Middletownians are flocking to Donald Trump

Trump’s promises to stand up to the Chinese are resonating, as is his message that “the system is rigged” against a proud group of Americans, Americans who built the postwar glory but now feel they’re being ignored or outright mocked. White trash is the one ethnic group it is still OK to make fun of.

There are decaying post-industrial Middletowns all over the map. In 1970, Vance notes, 25 percent of white children lived in neighborhoods with poverty rates above 10 percent. By 2000 the figure had risen to 40 percent, and Vance believes it is higher today. The life expectancy for Vance’s people is declining.

The factory closings on the one hand and the welfare checks on the other created lots of idle people. And what do they do with all that spare time? Drugs. Government checks are easily laundered.

Stay tuned as Atkins and friends share their updated magical remedy for rebirth of our city.  Always remember his motto, "Give me the power and I'll make things happen."  Help is on the way.  Any day now a new batch of baseless hoopla will again be flowing from the bureaucrats occupying One Donham Abbey.   It's time for Forbes Magazine to do an update on the 2016 economic and physical health of Middletown.

Should we expect both Forbes Magazine and The New York Post to become targets of the city plans to re-imagine the city, and provide invites to show downtown to visit the added restaurants? There was one excellent point made in the article. Those wealthy enough to take their losses and move out of Middletown, have done so. Those not have stayed behind, underwater, waiting for it to come back.

Once was a huge supporter of city manager, but as time goes on, seeing same ol same ol. Too bad. East end are two transplants from Middltown, AK and hospital. Not much else. Downtown?  Central got paved. Lets throw a party, that a main thoroughfare got asphalt when neighborhoods have nothing. Game changer right?

Ya know, it doesn't help on this "white trash coming to Middletown" thing when the city leaders add to the problem by bringing in all the HUD, low income recipients they can find, making Middletown a ghetto and the HUD mecca for SW Ohio. It certainly doesn't improve on the city's image if the city leaders keep giving the city a black eye with their low income attraction theme. We are now stereotyped in the area as being a poor community with nothing to offer potential new residents. A far cry from decades past. Why would you intentionally trash a city's reputation like that? What are you thinking?

There is a sick mentality and a bit of irony here in the city leader thinking. On one hand, they want a "college/higher education atmosphere and a cultural/art driven/upscale/coffee shop type clientele" in their downtown area but are perfectly willing to trash the remainder of the city by inviting the other end of the society spectrum to town in the form of low income/HUD people as a source of revenue for the slumlords and others who may benefit by this flawed thinking. A demonstration of a lack of any common sense from any city leader in the past three decades. Pathetic.

What A City,

You are a little off on your comments. Here are some of the income facts as of 2013:

The lowest income in Middletown is listed under the Asian demographic. This is largely skewed due to the influx of Asian students taking courses at Miami University. These students technical earn little to no income.  There is a 56% drop in income for Asians since 2010.

Only Hispanic and American Indian demos (outside of Asian) have seen a decrease in income over the same time period. However, despite the decline in the Hispanic per capita income, the household income has actually increased. This could be due to more Hispanics entering the workforce at entry level jobs (aka, first jobs for high school grads or college students).

Changes in per capita income in all other demos has gone up since 2010 including whites at 8.5% (so your white trash got a raise?).

In addition, Middletown's unemployment is 4.9% as of 2015. So, hey, at least white trash is working?

In addition, the city has sought in the recent past to rid itself of the vouchers while trying to balance the need to hold on to some of them as just removing all housing would cause more harm than good (now you would be making people homeless).

Your argument may have been more valid in 2007-2010. But there has been an honest upswing in both income and jobs while a concerted effort to bring down the section 8 housing numbers.

itsa, the numbers you mention are encouraging but I'm afraid the damage has already been done to the city's reputation and ability to attract more upscale, decent people to the city. Despite your report, it could be that the city leader's low income invitations and the excessive HUD vouchers brought here  in the past, have created a situation that is beyond repair. We have been taken from a respectable hard working blue collar city to one of perceived low income ghetto status and a town that is not desirable to live in, The poor school performance for decades is known throughout the area as well which doesn't  help us a bit.........and no one in the city building nor on the school board or administration seems to want to make a major change toward rendering a solution either. Business as usual at the Donham bunker and in the school board meeting rooms.

Take a look at the current lengthy listing of HUD-owned and other foreclosed homes in the city.  For the most part, you will find very low asking prices along with questionable property condition(s).  It Is noted that this situation is somewhat better than in prior years.

It's also suggested to consult a REALTOR to determine the number, location, condition and price(s) of other homes listed for sale here.  The picture remains very cloudy at best.  City staff had millions of tax dollars at their disposal to address these problems.  Sadly, they were extravagant with spending on a number of projects.  The housing malaise continues.
