SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Middletown Madison celebrated its third trip to the Division III regional tournament in four years and the 90th career win for seniors Brittany Shields and Abby Jerger Saturday evening after a 58-27 win over Summit Country Day in a girls’ basketball district final at Springfield High School.
Madison, ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press Division III state poll, will meet Miami East, a 63-39 winner over Georgetown earlier on Saturday, in the regional semifinals Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Springfield.
“It means everything, especially it being my senior year,” Shields said. “We’ve been here, me and Abby, as captains four times. Winning means everything. Getting win No. 90 through four years of my high school career means everything.”
Madison was beaten by Georgetown in the district final last season, lost three-time all-state player Ally Malott to graduation and Jerger went down with an injury midseason.
“We were eager to get this opportunity,” Mohawks coach John Rossi said.
“Our kids really responded. We have a lot of balance this year. Four kids average between 10 and 13 points. They play together. As our season progressed, they just kept progressing.”
The Mohawks closed the first quarter on a 14-0 run and were never seriously challenged by the Silver Knights.
