As the primary election day draws near, I think that we all
realize that only a single endorsed candidate from each party will be running
for most local and state offices.
However, The Butler County Republican Party Central Committee (the
organization that selects the “endorsed candidates” for county offices) was not
able to reach the 60% majority required to “endorse” a candidate for one county
office this year, which means that there will be an actual Republican primary
election to determine who will be the Republican candidate this November. That office is “Clerk of Courts”. I mention this for two reasons: First, to urge everyone to vote in
the Primaries next week on Tuesday, March sixth. Second, to urge everyone who is so
inclined, to ask for a Republican ballot and to vote for Jeff Wyrick

| Sure would be nice to try on some independents for a change. Already know what you're gonna get with Dems and Repubs. This area is so heavily ladened with Repubs and we still have our share of screw-ups within the county office holder ranks. Be nice to see the voters change it up a little just to see what happens. It's not necessarily paradise with all Repubs running the show for so many years either. |

Vet, While I don’t disagree, I would
estimate that there is a 95% probability that the Republican nominee for Butler
County Clerk of Courts will be the winner in November (as with most Butler
County offices). For that reason, it
behooves us to try to nominate the very best candidate. For Clerk of Courts, I believe that the best candidate is Jeff Wyrick. I've been watching this race for awhile. My question regarding Jeff's claim about the $1M dollars would be that if the money was there before Mary took office why didn't he or his predicesor return it when they had the chance in previous years? I do enjoy his bio particularly the part where he describes himself as being treated as a "rock star" at Association meetings.

I would encourage all to vote for Mitt Romney for the GOP President nominee. I have known Mitt for many years when he was at Boston Consulting Group, then Bain. Unlike the ads you may have read from Newt Gingrich's SuperPac, Mitt was a VP at age 30, unheard of in the ,management consulting industry. While in his 30's, Bain introduced a model that was quite unique, that is, to take best practice consulting models and concepts and incorporate them in a partnership with companies having trouble in the market (facing bankruptcy), or a start-up, such as Staples. Bain was not a corporate raider, but a consulting firm that implemented its concepts it used for Fortune 500 companies to its shared risk business model for turn-arounds and start-ups. In the Olympics, which was facing financial ruin, within two years he turned it around. As Gov of the most liberal state in the nation, Massachusetts, he cut taxes nineteen times, and left a surplus of $2 Bb in 4 years, without a tax increase. Mitt was chosen to head Bain Capital, which was the new spin-off company of Bain Company, and under his leadership, it was highly successful. In my opinion, the government, albeit local, state, or federal, should be run as a business. It should operate with best practices, metrics, and guidelines. Evaluate Middletown as a city that is run in an alternative manner, where petty crony politics engulf its daily activities and strategic direction. The U.S. is now $15 Tt in debt, and heading towards a Greece bail-out. Under Obama, gasoline has doubled. Gas impacts all aspects of consumption, from food, heating/ cooling, tires, petro products, and thousands of other ancillary items. It takes a bottom-line guy to turn a bottom line problem into a solution. Mitt is a no nonsense, fact based leader, period. Mitt Romney has 30 years of experience in turn-arounds. He is the only candidate that actually has leadership, turn-around, profit, budget, and best practice experience. He also is the only candidate that can beat Barack Obama in the fall. If Obama is re-elected, in 4 years, the national debt will top $20 Tt, and we will be on the verge of global collapse. There is only one leader running in the GOP Presidential race, and that is Mitt Romney. I hope you will vote for him, as the country's future depends not on electing career politicians whom got beat by 20 pts in their last election, or another that resigned under the cloud of ethic violations, but the single individual whom is symbolic of fiscal sanity, small government, and protection of fundamental liberties. Rome is burning, and a fire truck must be dispatched immediately to avoid the house from being completely destroyed. Mitt is the man whom knows how to maneuver the truck to get to the house, to operate the hose, to put out the raging fire. All others could not answer the call into the fire station for the initial dispatch for help.  I must add, there are many negative aspects I remind the voter regarding Rick Santorum. He is a big government spender. He epitomizes the type of candidate the tea party movement replaced in previous elections, as did Mike Dewine, current Ohio AG. Besides the well chronicled programs Rick voted for, including No Child Left Behind, which he now "regrets", the most distressing fact for many in his home state of Pennsylvania is this: In his last year in office he was in Pennsylvania only three weeks of the year. He bought a $85,000 house next to his wife's, but did not live there. His family lived in northern Virginia. He and his wife stuck his county with the use of an online computer system for state residents, for $65,000., which the Pa DOE paid, because Rick Santorum and his family, were NON RESIDENTS in the state he represented for Senate. He lost his re-election by nearly 20 pts, on his extreme social ideas, RINO voting record, and while being a non-resident. Sure, here goes: First let me begin: NEITHER RICK SANTORUM< RON PAUL< OR NEWT GINGRICH WOULD EVER WIN GENERAL ELECTION!!! To your 7 pts: 1) RomneyCare was fashioned to cover the 7% in Massachusetts that DID NOT have healthcare. It is highly received within the state, costs less than the system did for the uninsured flooding the hospitals for a head cold, and was based solely upon state rights. The Commerce Clause does not operate under the Constitution for states, only federal GUIDELINES. Mitt Romney WILL APPEAL ObamaCare, which is far over-reaching. The state accepted and has found RomneyCare to be a success for Massachusetts. 2) Taxes- Like all states, Massachusetts had a constitutional mandate to balance budget. Romney did that every year, WITHOUT RAISING TAXES, the same as Gov Kasich did in Ohio. 3) Financial Bailout- Did you prefer the entire global financial system collapsing? He was opposed to auto bailout, and supported/supports any and all bankruptcy restructuring. And your alternative would be Paul, Gingrich, or Santorum, two of which are gig government spenders, and Paul has not sponsored a legislative initiative since he was elected in Congress 30 + years ago. 4) Global Warming- Mitt Romney is not opposed to using coal, gas, or any alternative means of energy. All are on the table. He did not sit on a couch with Nancy Pelosi. And does anyone actually know if GLOBAL WARMING is true or not? No, its disputed with phD's and predictive modeling which are far smarter than you and I, so the jury is still out. BUT, and there is always a BUT, Mitt will burn coal, drill, open up fed resources, use wind, solar, whatever it takes, to REDUCE energy costs. 5. 2nd Amendment- NRA has no problem with Mitt. Not planning on banning guns. Does everyone need an AK 47 assault rifle or an arsenal anyway? Not in my book. Gun sales and bullets will be protected by Mitt Romney, non issue no. 5. So you want to own an F14 for your personal defense? If not, just guns, Mitt says, "Irresponsible people and criminals kill, guns don't." 6. Abortion- He vetoed the Legislation in Massachusetts regarding abortion and coverage of costs in RomneyCare. Pretty brave for one man to do this over a state 85% Democratically controlled body, agreed? 7) Regulation- Your pts advocate NO REGULATION. So, we have planes that crash, and banks that fail, like the housing collapse in 2008? Mitt is a moderate regulation individual, find the right regulations and then deploy them. Why did Canada escape the housing collapse? Regulations. Do you prefer $8.00/gal gas while you drive to WPAFB or $2.50/gal? I prefer $2.50. For all his woodenness and wishy washy positions, I don't see how anyone could view anyone other than Mitt as a viable nominee.
Paul? not a chance Newt? not electable. The guy borders on being a megolomaniac and simply cannot be trusted Santorum? for the reasons acclaro has posted, I don't see him as a realistic candidate. Of all the candidates, I think Mitt is the only one that has a good track record, is stable, has the credentials, and has a dose of pragmatism. |

Again, I'll ask the question I asked before. How much of what is stated in 409's Best State/Worst State link was under Romney's administration? To address your response.... I prefer capitalism (handled correctly). Socialism with emphasis on minority priority is what we are getting from Obama. Too many dam handouts to minorities while shafting the majority. Don't care for that as I watch the majority rights eroding to benefit select segments of society under the "give away the house" Democrats. Obviously reigning in the debt is preferred (for the country as well as individual households). The ONLY logical choice here. $8.00 per gallon as opposed to $2.50/gallon? How is Romney going to do that for us consumers, unless he regulates the oil and gas industry, starts drilling in off limits areas of the country and convinces the oil companies to build more refineries at a faster clip? How do you control an industry that gouges the consumer without hourly notices at the pump? Dirty bomb....terrorists...... Think Romney has any better plan to protect the country than anyone else? Haven't heard his ideas on this as yet. Does he have any experience in this arena? How about any military/war experience? What about his foreign policies? Will he keep going from war to war as has been the foreign policies of Bush and Obama- IE. Iraq to Afghanistan, possibly Syria and Iran upcoming? Not familiar with his beliefs. It won't be as clear nor as simple for me until I hear more than what I hear each night in the news (local and national editions)from this guy. I hear him pounding on Santorum (or Gingrich when Newt had the lead early on) on a repetitive basis moreso than hearing him lay out his policies and what he would like to do as President. His approach seems vague as to his gameplan to this point. JMO |

Fair enough questions Vet. Try again: 1) Romney strongest on border control and illegal immigration. The Dream Act need not apply under Mitt, unlike Obama. I thought you left Az because of lowered wages from immigration of Latinos's? 2) Iran- crippling sanctions, and direct hit if required. No nuke under Mitt's stewardship. 3) Gas. Mitt's policy is clear; disallow the Chinese manipulation of their currency driving our $ downward in a spiral, and setting high export taxes on crude we export to foreign powers. The US has a huge crude surplus presently, that is being exported to Europe today. Mild winter translates to overcapacity in oil reserves, but export tariff tax will penalize Exxon, Chevron, Shell, etc, from exporting to highest bidder. Keeping crude barrels in US drives gas prices down, raising currency provides greater buying power of crude imported. Thirdly, Mitt is for fracking, and opening all federal land for drilling. Offshore ocean exploration and drilling will be lifted. And, nuclear power plants will be built, and additional REFINERIES. Obama's Plan? Everyone drop $40,000 for a Toyota Prius or a Chevy Volt, which gives 100 miles on a charge. , |

I like the idea that Romney is strong at the border. You are correct. We did leave Tucson due to the poor job selections, low wages and no benefits scenario. Agree with his stance on illegals. Don't want 'em here either. Sanctions for Iran? Ok, might work but will it bring them to their knees and shut them down on the rhetoric and the Gulf of Hormuz (sp?) blockade talk? Dunno. I've about had it with the Syrians, Iraquis, Iranians and the Afghans (on the book burning incident). To hell with the Afghans. If this is the way we're treated after driving the Taliban out (at least until we leave for good, then they'll be back), I say pull all US people/troops out and low level nuke 'em. Exteme, perhaps. Send a message- you betcha. Not gonna take anymore of the world's crap anymore. Don't know how Romney will accomplish the Chinese manipulation of currency thing. If we have a surplus in gas, why do we have gouging going on at the pump? Isn't it common knowledge that if supplies are plentiful, prices favor the consumer? Apparently, not in this case. The oil companies just keep socking it to "we, the people" and no one is there to speak for us......ever. Tax the oil companies? Hell, they'll just pass it on to us. Nowhere to go in a monopoly driven industry. |

Observer, If I understand the mechanics of it correctly (and I am
unsure that I do), it had always been the policy under previous Clerks of Court
to transfer surpluses to the General Fund once a year at the end of the fiscal
year. The small surpluses in previous years made this a non-issue until an
increase in fees and the “cash for clunkers” program caused surpluses to grow. When former Clerk of Courts Cindy Carpenter became a County
Commissioner, Jeff Wyrick (who had been working in the Clerk of Courts office
for ten years) was appointed interim Clerk of Court but served in
that office for only a few weeks. He was
preparing to return the surplus funds on a monthly basis when the Central
Committee met to appoint a Clerk to serve until the next election. Mr. Wyrick lost by only a few votes to Mary
Swaim (his opponent in the upcoming primary election). Ms. Swaim, chose NOT to turn over the surplus
funds but instead sat on the surplus until she felt she could make a political

It makes me nuts to watch the news and see that men such as Santorum or Newt are even still in the race (thanks religious right) Mitt in my mind is the only one that could defeat Obama.But it looks like that Santorum may be the nominee and he stands about as much chance as Mclame and Sarah Palin did in 2008. I have this silly notion that Mitts religion is whats keeping the religious right from supporting Mitt Romney. I think I would just stay home from the poles if Rick Santorum is the Republican candidate or else just write in Mickey Mouse on that section of the ballot. Mitt Romney is the best and possibly only hope we have of ending Obamas reign.

Agreed on both points Bo, and well stated. Please vote Tuesday, or before. Santorum will not win nomination, he's slipping as he has had his day in the sun. The debate is catching up with him. |

Thanks for the response. The Cash for Clunkers explanation doesn't make sense to me. That program ran from July of 2009 through late August 2009. It's very hard to believe that funds were just coming through in late 2011, that's almost 2 years! It's the gov't so i guess it could be possible.
I guess for me it's hard for Jeff to have it both ways. He wants credit for the money turned over to the county that he didn't turn over. If the practice was to turn it over monthly then how was there in excess of $700,000 in the account when Mrs. Swain took over? From reading about Jeff he was Cindy's chief deputy for several years. If it was the practice of Cindy to turn the money over annually then why is Jeff banging on Mary for doing the exact same thing Cindy did and turn it over annually? From a budgeting perspective it seems to make perfect sense to do it annually as opposed to monthly in the event that the office has a money crunch and needs funds toward the end of the year.
I don't doubt your sincerity Mike it just seems to me Mrs. Swain has a legitimate point on the funds she turned over and Jeff seems like a decent enough guy and should focus more on the qualifications he has for the job. |
