Very interesting article Vivian. The Great Depression just started in 1929, and I think the author was trying to make a push for new buildings and making the point that "old buildings" were bad, especially the buildings that related to the canal when it was still in use. But the areas they mention in this article aren't really the core downtown buildings... just the stuff off the beaten path, except for where the bank was built. You can see that the author didn't expect the depression to last as long as it did, since it is mentioned that new stuff would be built along the canal within a couple years of the old shacks being torn down. Very cool :)
