SunCoke Energy and AK Steel may be teaming up to build SunCoke's fifth plant in Middletown, Ohio. And that has people concerned about pollution and property values.
Regarding Pollution: MUSA has obtained from http://www.suncoke.com/environmentallysound.html" rel="nofollow - SunCokes Website
There are no hazardous solid wastes, sludges, no waste water discharges and as for the air, SunCoke Energy uses a non-recovery technology called MACT (Maximum Achievable Control Technology) for US Coke making. (Victoria, Brazil may be another thing).
Also from their site:
Beginning coke production in 1962, SunCoke Energy's negative-pressure oven
technology has undergone 10 generations of design improvement to now become the
undisputed technology leader in the industry. It is also the industry
trailblazer in developing cogeneration of electricity in conjunction with coke
plant operations. SunCoke Energy currently operates metallurgical coke plants in Vansant,
Virginia, East Chicago, Illinois, Haverhill, Ohio and Vitria, Brazil . These
facilities produce over 4.3 million tons of coke each year. SunCoke Energy is a
wholly owned business unit of Sunoco, Inc., a Fortune 100 firm.
Outsourcing of on-site coke production is a preferred option for many
steelmakers. SunCoke Energy brings together the technical and operating
expertise to build, own, and operate a coke plant with you and guarantee a
world-class cokemaking plant at a highly competitive cost.
