Superintendent Price and school district separate

MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown Board of Education has approved a separation agreement with Superintendent Steve Price.

The board voted 4-0 on the agreement at a special 7:30 a.m meeting today, June 4.

Board President Greg Tyus, who was part of the same school board that hired Price, was absent from the meeting because he is out of town.

Price, 54, offered his resignation at the meeting as part of the agreement. He declined comment following the board vote.

Price’s last day with the district will be July 31. He has been with Middletown schools since 2001.

Board members did not name an interim superintendent or give any information on plans for a candidate search, but said they would discuss it at the next regularly scheduled board meeting on June 15.

Board Vice President Katie McNeil said differences of opinion on policy led to the separation. Price, who made $125,634.07 in 2008, leaves the district with two years remaining on his contract.

“The board and Dr. Price mutually agree that it is beneficial for both parties to separate their employment relationship at this time,” McNeil said, reading from a prepared statement. “The district will pay Dr. Price for a portion of his accrued and unused sick leave and all accrued and unused vacation days.”

McNeil said the district would also make monthly payments to Price in lieu of base pay and health insurance until he finds another position.

“But in no event for more than one year,” she said.

When the board hired Price seven year’s ago the board of education directed him to focus on three priorities, McNeil said. Those were raising the achievement levels of all students in the district, addressing the issue of diversity and addressing the district’s facility needs.

“The board appreciates Dr. Price’s years of dedication and service to the district, and the Middletown community, and wishes him success as he moves on to new challenges,” McNeil said.

Price began his career in Middletown with a pledge to make the local school district the first urban school district in Ohio to achieve an excellent rating on the state report card. Though he never achieved that goal, Price did enjoy some other successes.

He got three consecutive three tax measure passed each on the first ballot, including a bond levy that had failed two times prior to his arrival.

Price also successfully oversaw the building of six new elementary school buildings and the renovation of two others.

But the superintendent had come under scrutiny in recent months for discipline problems in schools throughout the district and a race and equity program he’d implemented that encouraged the district’s teaching staff to have “courageous conversations” about race. Price saw value in the program as a way to improve teacher-student relations in his diverse urban district and narrow the achievement gap between whites and other minority groups.

But the program drew criticism recently by some in the community and the district, despite contentions from Price and other school officials that it was producing results. Critics questioned the value and cost of program and whether the district should focus its efforts elsewhere.

In recent months, Price has applied for positions with two urban Ohio school districts, Cincinnati and Springfield, but was not selected. He has also applied with Beavercreek City Schools.

AMEN! I wonder what Mr. Venturella is now thinking of his push to extend Price's contract. Also wonder what the settlement amounts to?

NOW school board....time to find a genuine leader for this position who isn't ingrained with old school ideaology.

This should make the citizens, the teachers, and the admin. very happy. I hope the school board makes a wise choice this time and doesn't select another "Price", "Eastridge", "Driscoll", "Johnson" cookie cutter type of super. Seems since the 80's, we have had several supers that have the same types of approach, ideas, personalites, agendas, methods and results. We need a radical new selection that will actually attack the problems with good common sense logic, communicate with the public in a non adversarial way, focus on upgrading the learning process, change the teaching methods if the current ones aren't working, stop alienating the teachers and admin under them, open minded, and will produce results without having to ask the public to fund schools that are more like college campus buildings than elementary schools. The new super must stop fighting the surrounding school districts like Franklin over land acquisition and learn to know when the battle has been lost.I'm glad he's gone. Wish he could take his buddies like Venturella with him. The town would be a little better for it. One of the few good moves by the school board in a long time. Wondered when they would wake up and do something positive for this district. If he's taking the bus out of town, I'll donate to the ticket price.

Hopefully the change will be a good one. We need some fresh blood all the way around!

And by the way, I am sick and tired of reading Auntie Ann's comments about the schools. Annie, you had your time now back off! And for her boy Billy Triick, where do you get off commenting about the schools? You run the Chamber of Commerence. Your job is to promote Middletown and draw business to this area. AND YOU ARE FAILING!Angry Stop being Annie's boy and start accomplishing something for this community.

It was time for a change but Annie we don't need the Good Ole Boys Club again. We need someone to unite the entire community, and establish a way for parents to become involved and care about their childrens needs! jmoThumbs%20Up

I talked to someone at Walmart the other day and the subject was Dr. Price. What we both found interesting is the fact that Price "can't find another job". Now while we agreed that the process of interviews and background checks does take time we also agreed that Price "doesn't stand a chance in hell" of getting a job in Ohio.

Perhaps we need a nationwide network with all supers in all states listed including personal backrounds, contact numbers, and past school district employment evaluations. We read just recently where Tom York, the past super of Edgewood has made it to, I believe, the Madison or Carlisle school system as the new super there. He retired from Edgewood and is "double dipping" in another system. Kinda like recycling an old tire and putting it on another car. If a nationwide system existed, perhaps a school district like Middletown, who is now looking for another super, could check this site, see the background of those applying here and begin the elimination of "recycled" supers from around the country before they're brought in for an interview. A good indicator would be the number of years they stayed in each assignment and how many moves they made in a given time frame. Frequent moves may indicate a problem with acceptance in the community. Then again, we were stuck with Price for seven years before someone finally had enough. JMO

Vet I agree, there is a need for some type of listing for people of this caliber listing accomplishments, condition of the schools they left and put a stop to the double dipping. As citizens we are always getting it shoved into our faces how great and important these people are,but the true facts say they are money hungry grubbing SOB's. (No not all,but a large percentage)
