Pete Rose to be inducted into Reds Hall of Fame, number to be retired
By Jay Morrison Staff Writer CINCINNATI — Speaking at the press conference announcing that Pete Rose will be inducted to the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame, team president and CEO Bob Castellini called it one of the greatest days in the history of the franchise. “Not a day has gone by since taking ownership of this franchise have we lost sight of Pete Rose,” Castellini said. “Pete, this is a proud moment for your Reds family and for your hometown. It’s our chance to thank you for pouring your heart into every game. Rose, who remains on Major League Baseball’s banned list for betting on baseball, will be the only member of the Class of 2016 enshrined during Hall of Fame weekend June 24-26. The Reds had to get permission from MLB to induct Rose. “I’m elated,” he said. “This is an honor that just can’t believe how you feel. This is the best Hall of Fame in all of baseball, and I’ve been to many of them. “I haven’t given up on Cooperstown,” He added. ” I’m not going to say this is second best thing. It’s not. This is the first big thing. In addition to inducting Rose into the Hall of Fame, the Reds will retire his No. 14, and Castellini said a statue is in the works, although he didn’t have a definitive timeline. Asked what he would like that statue to depict, Rose drew a huge roar of laughter when he said, “I sure as hell don’t want it to be standing at Turfway in the $2 window.” “Probably a head-first (slide) statue,” he added after getting serious. “Because I was know for that. But any statue, as long as it’s got that ‘C’ on it.” In late 2015, new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred upheld Rose’s lifetime ban for gambling on baseball. The schedule of events for the 2016 Reds Hall of Fame Induction Weekend include: Friday, June 24 (7:10 p.m.) •Pregame ceremonies celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1976 World Series Champion Reds •Reds players and coaches will wear 1976 throwback uniforms •All fans receive a commemorative 1976 Reds team photo •1976 World Series replica ring ticket package (details to be released soon) •Fireworks Friday Saturday, June 25 (4:10 p.m.) •Pregame Hall of Fame induction ceremony •All fans receive a Pete Rose poster Sunday, June 26 (1:10 p.m.) •Pregame Pete Rose Number 14 Retirement Ceremony •All fans receive Pete Rose commemorative print •Hall of Fame Induction Gala at the Duke Energy Convention Center (6 p.m.). Tickets for the gala go on sale Feb. 14. |

5 things to know about Pete Rose being inducted into Reds Hall of Fame By Jay Morrison - Staff Writer CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds announced Tuesday that Pete Rose will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. Here are five things to know about the June 24-26 induction weekend at Great American Ball Park: 1. The induction ceremonies will coincide with a tribute to the 1976 team as it celebrates the 40-year anniversary of its World Championship season. There will be an on-field reunion of that team prior to the Friday 7:10 p.m. game, and the current Reds will wear 1975 throwback jerseys. 2. Rose’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on the field Saturday prior to the start of the 4:10 p.m. game. All fans will receive a Pete Rose poster. 3. Rose’s No. 14 will officially be retired during an on-field ceremony prior to Sunday’s 1:10 p.m. game. Only one player has worn No. 14 since Rose managed his final game for the Reds in 1989, and that was his son, Pete Jr., during a brief 11-game call-up in 1997. 4. The opponent for the Hall of Fame weekend series will be the San Diego Padres, the same team the Reds faced when Rose delivered the signature moment of his career, hit No. 4,192 to break Ty Cobb’s record on Sept. 11, 1985. 5. Rose will be the 86th member of the Reds Hall of Fame and the lone inductee in the Class of 2016 so as not to take all the attention away from anyone else who would have been inducted alongside him. |
