How much is too much Section 8 housing?By Ed Richter | Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 11:59 PM In less than a month, candidates for Middletown City Council will be known once they file their petitions with the Butler County Board of Elections. One issue that will be raised by voters is the Section 8 issue and how the four candidates for the open ward seats will address it. Although the city administration is in the process of developing a new administrative plan for the federally funded program of more than $11 million to fund the more than 1,660 housing choice vouchers, the question still remains how much should Middletown have compared to the rest of the county? And should the city continue to have just more than 50 percent of the vouchers assigned to Butler County even though it has 15 percent of the county’s population? As the recession continues, there is no doubt the need to provide clean, safe and decent affordable housing for low to moderate income resident will remain. But how much is too much and if you were making the decision, how many of these vouchers do you think the city should have? Let us know where the line should be drawn. |

The total amount of vouchers should be a low percentage of the over all population of the city. If we have 51,000 then the vouchers available should be about 1% which would produce about 510 section 8's which should be the norm over the 3.5% more or less that we have now. But the bad side is if the slum lords do not have the resources then houses sit empty and become blighted property which we also have already because most slum lords do not live in Middeltown. Putting a stop to the slum lord mentality and limit the amount of houses one person can own (using section 8) would help this problem greatly. Holding banks accountable for their foreclosed properties would also help.
