“Middletown High School’s graduation rate slipped slightly to 79.3 percent for 2008, landing the school in the bottom 20 of Ohio’s public schools, according to the ODE.”

Another example of our schools’ “CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT”, I guess.

	Mike In my March 24, 2009 post the school board stated they are expecting ALL the school scores to be lower. I guess the question is now…How low can they go?

	But.....But...... Uncle Stevie, being our beloved Soupyintendent, said we were doing better with the changes within our schools, with the new $45 million dollar high tech schools and with a renewed focus on being the first urban district to achieve Excellence!!! Mike- Vivian- are you telling us that Stevie Wonder has been " just a foolin' us? I'm absolutely crushed! The March 24 school board revelation that the grades were "expected" to be lower doesn't leave a warm fuzzy feeling as to the school's ability to teach, does it???? Haven't heard any school board member(s) going out of their way to express concern about this. Where's the self labeled desire/concern/dedication to see that this school system rises from the ashes??? It ain't real apparent board boys and girls.

	Mike- It would be interesting to see how many times the Middletown School system used the term - "a work in progress" over the years. Seems to me that I have heard/read many articles concerning the Midd. school's on-going attempt to explain the last place finishes in academics when compared to any district in this area. This "work in progress" theme has been going on since the 80's, perhaps the 70's. How many years must pass before we see some viable evidence that this saying is actually true? The school performance hasn't seen appreciable progress in over 25 years. How long would these people leave the record skip on the turntable before they bumped the needle or took the record off the player??

	Is it possible that the "work in progress" reputation of Middletown's schools has a direct bearing on the desirability of working families to purchase homes in our community? Is it possible that the over abundance of subsidized housing and waste/mismanagement of HUD funds has a direct bearing on the desirability of working families to purchase homes in our community? City Hall experts -- tell us what demographic changes have been occuring in Middletown over the past decade? Are we continuing to lose working families and gain the lower income instead? Middletown City Government -- A shocking and avoidable tragedy in progress!

	Vet they ditched the "First Urban District....." mumbo jumbo a while ago as it is most likely not attainable anytime soon. The new Mission statement is: "The mission of the Middletown City Schools is to provide our culturally diverse students with highly-challenging and engaging school work, which assists them in gaining valued knowledge and skills. We will continue to operate the district in a fiscally responsible manner with a priority of student achievement." The Vision is: "Recognizing the need to prepare students to become productive members of a democratic society, we envision that the Middletown City School District will: • Raise achievement levels of all students • Eliminate achievement gaps • Earn a rating of "Excellent" on the school district's state report card " Perplexed you are right, there is a sever imbalance of the economic backgrounds of the students in Middletown schools. This has a direct impact on the performance of the school system and students. Those that can flee the Middletown School system are, either by enrolling out of the district or going to private schools. The City is only encouraging more low income residents to move to Middletown as that is basically where the bulk of its time is spent.
