Districts try to recover money lost to charter schools

Area school districts are taking different approaches to recoup the millions of dollars they are losing to charter schools each year.

Hamilton City Schools is losing $3.3 million this year to students that enroll in charter schools, while Middletown is losing $5.4 million and Fairfield is losing $1.4 million, according to a Hamilton JournalNews analysis of reports by the Ohio Department of Education.

And those numbers have climbed from a year ago. Middletown schools lost $5.02 million in the 2011-2012 school year; Hamilton lost $2.7 million; and Fairfield lost $1.1 million
