SuperPetz-Specialty store for pet food, etc. Specialty stores are always a little higher priced than going to the pet department at Wal-Marts and getting that pet food. Big box stores can usually undercut the specialty stores. Bad economy means people are looking for the best values they can find such as is with pet food, usually bought in bulk. We have pets and have compared prices. Never went back to Superpetz after seeing the difference in what our money could buy. Kinda surprised it lasted this long, actually. And the "ghost town" theme continues in Middletown, formally known as an "All-American City" before they began to dismantle it. JMO

As long as you have a leadership that thinks the Savior of Middletown is an Arts District downtown and they continue to ignore the businesses they have this will go on.  Look for more to go in the next 6 months or so.  But hey the PAC is coming to downtown we are all saved.   Man what a city.

I liked Superpetz...sorry to see it leave.

Wasn't the bread store the same one that was downtown then moved out towards the mall then moved again and went out of business ?

Be glad when that train gets here, maybe it will bring some people with money. (then we can all stand around the depot and rob them as they get off the train) Shocked  Cool

Now Hermes, you and I both know that the only way you're gonna get people with money to get off that fancy new train is to go aboard and hit 'em over the head and drag 'em off. Ain't no one with any money (or sense) that has any interest in stopping off in the town formally known as the "All American City". What are they gonna stop for, a bargain down at Richie's Pawn Central or to enjoy the amenities the arts district has to offer? And, if they decide to drive rather than take the train, there ain't no parking spaces downtown-too crowded don't cha know!

And now, Pizza Hut is gone along with Rally's a while back. Only have Long John Silvers and Wendy's and we'll have an entire block down to Subway vacant. Still not sending any signal of urgency for the city leadership I guess. Wonder what will make them sit up and take note?????

Look for the One Donham Plaza bureaucrats to operate a mobile food cart set up near the new Starving Artists Complex on Central Avenue.  They will feature IMITIATION BALONEY SANDWICHES and HOT AIR PALM READING SESSIONS for us Middletonians!  What a City!

It's all about perspective I guess.

For example, Pizza Hut—part of a global chain that operates in outdated locations—closes.  Not just in Middletown, but six other locations in Southwest Ohio.

But in the last several years, Middletown has seen two new pizza places opening: Marco's and Little Caesars (remember when there was a Little Caesars over in Kittywawk.  It shut down, only to have one open in the former Radio Shack location several years later.)

LaRosa's also opened a sit-down restaurant with delivery options few years ago town.

Pizza Hut, at least for the time being, continues to operate a sit-down location on Verity.  And all indications are they will continue to operate their carryout location on Kittyhawk, just a short distance from the Breiel dine-in location.  My guess is they realized that could not competitively operate two dine-in and one carryout.

Besides, with Cassano’s in town, who really needs any other pizza J They’ve done a nice remodel job on their Verity store!

The Rally’s on Breiel is a good example of being limited by the current structure.  There is no indoor dining.  You are limited to drive-up type businesses.  Rally’s and Hot-n-Now are the only two fast food chain concepts that I know of that utilize this model.  Basically, it would only be good for a to-go coffee place or some type of ice cream place.

Butternut-  horrible new location with bad signage.

This was taken from DDN on the Pizza Hut closings in SW Ohio.

The restaurant is one of seven Pizzas Huts that are closing in southwest Ohio. Four of the targeted stores are in Cincinnati, and one each in Hamilton and Middletown are either closed or slated to close in the coming weeks, Pizza Hut spokesman Chris Fuller said.

Fuller would not discuss the factors that led to the decision to close the seven restaurants, citing “competitive business reasons.” He also would not disclose how many are employed at the Englewood Pizza Hut.

Fuller said the restaurants that are closing may be remodeled and may reopen in their current location, or there may be other newly constructed Pizza Hut restaurants that could open nearby. But he said the chain is not ready to announce detailed plans.

A person who answered the phone at the Englewood Pizza Hut but who declined to give a name said the restaurant has nine employees, two of whom are transferring to other Pizza Hut locations.

The mood in the restaurant was somber, the employee said, although business was brisk at lunchtime on Monday, the restaurant’s last full day of operations.

The restaurant has been in its current location since the late 1960s, the employee said, “and people have heard we are closing and are coming in to say goodby

Alas, we should have known this was coming!
Please recall the rhetoric surrounding past levy campaigns:
This one will only cost you one PIZZA per month...that one will only cost you one PIZZA per week...
So many levies...so few pizzas!!!
Middletown's once thriving pizza industry had to start suffering. Cry
What will be next on the levy supporters "hit list"??? LOL LOL LOL

lol--good point mike
when Cassano's goes, I am out of here

swohio--what you miss is that we now have three or more prime commercial locations that will sit empty indefinitely, not to mention a few dozen more locals out of work in a city with no jobs available.

but then again--I don't believe that you live here

That is true, but commercial vacancy is a growing problem across the country. Many experts anticipate a collapse in commercial real estate soon, which will leave many more storefronts vacant across Middletown and the U.S. We are overbuilt in retail, it is that simple.

"just that simple" in your eyes. Support.

Like SWOhio, I don't believe you live here, and probably for good reason.
It is do "simple" when it isn't your life, property, future and community in this condition.
I do agree about the impending commercial real estate collapse, and the over-building/duplication that has occurred over the last 20-30 years. Just throw up a cheap strip center and fill it with whatever.
Well--now those developers and property management companies are bankrupt and long gone, while vacant, deteriorating structures remain. I know about this sonce I own businesses and property in two of these local centers.

Where was city planning/ED when all of this was happening?
It was obvious that this situation was sure to come.
We pay these people well to do us better than they have done.
So--they retire early and well, while we have another major mess to dig out of ourselves.

Maybe Pendleton will save us.
Just how much taxpayer $$ is involved so far, and how will the taxpayer actually benefit from this project?
Who will own thebuilding, and at what cost?
What are the risks for Pendleton(a private venture obviously dependent on public funding)?
Why has the city been so silent on this project?

From the City Managers Report:

"Farmer’s Market---I am sad to report that the farmer’s market at Governor’s Square has close due to lack of interest. They are looking for someone to take over management and hope to reopen in 2011."

Not enough support downtown to buy Tomato's and cucumbers, but people are going to buy $100.00, $200.00 or $500.00+ artwork.  Yeah Right.

Wonder how that melon/fruit stand/greenhouse setup is doing in the parking lot of Towne Mall by Kroger? If doing well, perhaps the right place for the Farmer's Market is there rather than downtown. Certainly more traffic flow, right? Good point wasteful- how do they expect people to frequent the area if they can't pull them downtown to buy at the market? Another reason to surmise that they will need a "heavy hitter" attraction to make people want to drive downtown again.... oh say, a casino! It will take much more than arts and a Farmer's Market I would think. Just flat out doesn't generate enough interest to the biggest majority of people. The chance of winning some money would, I bet!

I believe the reason the Famer's Market was not very popular is because of the vendors.  On a sunny day I only ever saw 3 vendors; one being a vendor with fruit from a national supplier.  The Famer's Market could easily be successful if there were more vendors.

Why are they putting a new roof on Pizza Hut?? Has it been sold already or are the current owners trying to spruce it up for a  future sale???
