Rumor has it a new 'Vertical Wind Tunnel' may be in the works.
If this occurs, the city should see many new visitors.

Near the beginning of the last council meeting, John Hart talks about the possibility of a new Vertical Wind Tunnel.(about 4:30 into the meeting) I think this would be a great addition.

Indoor skydiving facility coming to Middletown By Rick McCrabb Staff Writer MIDDLETOWN — Those looking for the skydiving experience may no longer have to check the weather forecast first. Start Aviation LLC, which operates Start Skydiving at the Middletown Regional Airport, has signed a franchise agreement with iFly Corp. to build an indoor skydiving facility in the city, according to Matt Eisenbraun, the city’s economic development program manager. The new project will be one of 15 vertical wind tunnels to open in the U.S. this year, Eisenbraun said. iFly operates 24 facilities around the world, including London, Dubai and Sydney, he said, and the closest site to Middletown will be a facility in Chicago that is scheduled to open this summer The Middletown project will likely include a restaurant with office and classroom space. While the exact location of the new project is undetermined, one potential site is Middletown Regional Airport. The attraction will complement the growing amenities and cluster of businesses at the airport, which include commercial aviation, flight schools and Start Skydiving, Eisenbraun said. He said the undeveloped acreage at the airport allows for business expansions that could support hundreds of jobs. The airport is a “burgeoning asset” for the city, Eisenbraun said, creating economic development through increased tourism, aviation services and offering significant opportunity for future development. The regional airport features the longest runway in the area at 6,100 feet; and its fixed base operator provides fuel sales and car rentals. Start Skydiving is rated No. 1 by skydivers worldwide, according to dropzone.com; and is one of the top five largest and fastest growing drop zones in the world. |

Plans for local indoor sky diving facility fulfill parachutist’s hopes By Chelsey Levingston Staff Writer Before Army parachutist Corey Hood tragically died last year in a skydiving accident, he dreamed of one day retiring from the military to his native Greater Cincinnati and seeing the opening of an indoor sky diving facility, his brother-in-law Steve Hunt said. “For anyone who loves this sport, indoor or outdoor skydiving, to see it being built in his hometown is a dream come true,” Hunt said. “That was a passion we both shared together.” “To us it was a no-brainer. There’s a need here for that,” Hunt said. The Texas-based company that was in talks with Hood and Hunt before Hood’s deadly mid-air collision at a Chicago airshow is eyeing plans to move forward on building a site in Greater Cincinnati. iFLY Indoor Skydiving is considering sites in Butler, Warren or Hamilton counties to build and open a facility, said Hunt, who is also representing the company as founder of iFLY Cincinnati. As much as Hood, a Golden Knights parachuter, loved jumping out of planes mid-air, indoor sky diving provides training, competitive leagues and helps simulate the free-fall experience in a way all ages and abilities can enjoy, said Hunt, also an avid skydiver. “It wasn’t just like that would be cool to see this happen. I mean it actually was a dream. One of the last conversations we had, he told me… it’s going to happen,” said Hunt. In fact, Hunt can join his paraplegic son in the wind tunnels. That’s one of the reasons he enjoys indoor skydiving, because it’s a sport his whole family can do together. “It’s really important for me because yes, we like it, but it’s really neat to see something he really loved actually come to fruition, and I think iFLY shares that emotion,” he said. Master Sgt. Hood’s wishes will still be carried out. Hunt said that iFLY plans to open a permanent memorial at the venue, once it opens, to remember Hood, a Lakota graduate. “It’s a perfect way to honor his life,” he said. Three locations are being evaluated before plans can move forward, but once the final location is identified, construction on the building could start this year as part of iFLY’s aggressive expansion plans worldwide, he said. The company currently operates 37 locations around the world in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia, according to its website. |

From MJ:
Indoor skydiving coming to Middletown Ed Richter - Staff Writer MIDDLETOWN— Construction could begin soon on an indoor vertical wind tunnel at Middletown Regional Airport that may become a destination location for thrill seekers. Middletown Planning Commission on Wednesday approved development plans for Start Skydiving to build a 130-foot tall, vertical, recirculating indoor wind tunnel in the 1700 block of Run Way. Once completed, it will be the tallest such facility in North America and would compliment the skydiving business current operations. The new wind tunnel would allow people to have a skydiving experience in a more controlled environment as well as attract more of the skydiving market and thrill seekers to this destination location. The proposed building would recreate the physics of free-fall by producing a 16-foot column of air so that skydivers can practice for several hours instead of several minutes experienced from a free-fall from a plane. |

Oh my, a destination. Middletown is thriving. Don't think so. Really not excited about this.
