Another trip to the Heart of Darkness (Washington, D.C.) and another opportunity for disgust. We visited all our Ohio non-representing representatives' offices. None were in, save for Mr. Driehaus. He was asked, "How are you going to vote on this health care bill?" His answer: 'Well, it depends upon what bill we're talking about." He was pressed further, "Well, what are you going to be voting on at the end of the week?" He ignored the question turned to two gentlemen in suits (lobbyists?) who were sitting in his waiting room shook their hands, and retired with them to an inner office. We were then shooed out of the office by his aides and the door was closed behind us.
Another interesting observation was that there were a large number of well-dressed individuals running around the halls of Canon, Longworth, and Rayburn Congressional office buildings with ID tags that had the names of pharmaceutical companies and medical device companies (lobbyists?). The first thought that I had was that "Someone is going to make some money off this deal!" It was also interesting as to how the suits looked at us with great apprehension or walked away when we approached. We must not lose heart and we must not relent on the phone calls (the phone was ringing off the hook in the offices we visited; Driehaus' aide looked especially exasperated). We must continue to fax and email. Even if they don't respond, at least they will know that we are here and we are watching! Above all, please continue to pray that our freedom will be preserved in this time of great darkness; that the schemes and skullduggery shall not stand in the light of truth. God bless all you lovers of freedom and all those who are willing to sacrifice their time, efforts, and reputations for our land. Carry on the fight! Gregg Nicholl, Middletown Tea Party |

Would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives but they'll never take our FREEDOM

ahh, there goes the "freedom" term. Freedom fries, freedom-loving Iraqis, freedom from tyranny...tyranny, wait, that's another talking point of the GOP -- let's all say it together now, "tyranny, tyranny, tyranny!". What other vitriol can we spew...how about this dream GOP scenario: we double our already monstrous defense budget (see Cheney and Halliburton), get into another war or two (see Bush era to define "darkness" and "skullduggery"), fight any attempt to put any shackles on the wealthy or corporations (survival of the fittest, ya know...you betcha!), continuing decay of educational/health/lifespan competitiveness among industrialized nations, insane CEO pay, widening gulf between rich and poor, everyone walking around the streets armed like it's Dodge City, and while we're at it let's double down on the War on Drugs all while making filing bankruptcy as a result of catastrophic health bills a near impossibility (see Bush era again). Folks, even though we won the medal count in the Winter Olympics, Canada is looking better and better.

the way the Rush, Beck, and Palin vehemently react to any discussion of health care refrom, you'd think we were about to lose thousands of lives invading another country looking for phantom weapons. But, hey, keep repeating "we have the best healthcare in the world" enough times, despite our world rankings, and you might actually believe it. |

Speaking of "everyone walking around the streets armed like it's Dodge City," exactly where IS all of that blood that was going to turn our streets red once the "concealed carry" law was passed in Ohio??? I haven't noticed it. Hasn't that law taken effect yet? I thought that it had.
Is it possible that The Journal has been taken over by the right wing wackos, and they are keeping the news of all of the mayhem from us??? How dare they!!!

Second amendment aside, what I can't relate to is the desire to carry a gun. Are there that many situations where someone, a stranger, in broad daylight, threatens harm to you? Are that many of us the victims of violent crimes? I would guess that most who are happen to live in poor drug-infested neighborhoods and may even be involved in a drug dispute themselves. Or perhaps domestic violence situations, in which case you should move out anyway. Mike, I would turn your question around and ask have there been that many situations where the concealed weapon saved the life of an innocent person? As for after dark, if you don't feel safe going somewhere at night, what are you doing there anyway?
The desire to carry a gun strikes me as either ridiculous overkill or a sign of a Napoleonic complex.

Mr. Nicholl- along with your "we must not lose heart and not relent on the phone" comments......sounds like WE MUST throw Driehaus out on his a-- and get someone in there that will entertain the people when they come 'a callin'. Pretty rude on his part from your description of events here. "Shooed out of the office by his aides and the door closed behind us"......ohh, he-- no. It's "making a scene" time if that happens. Typical pompous ass--! Young Stevie Driehaus needs to learn his place and park his ego at the door lest he sets himself up for some verbal abuse.

I can't relate to someone wanting to eat Liver and Onions. Does that mean I should view any one who does like it to be "stupid"? Of course not! So....what is your point? |

umm, I thought it was pretty clear...my point is I don't understand those that feel the need to carry a gun out in public, that's the point. No one said they're stupid, I just don't get it.

Pardon me, Bill, but I was NOT the one who introduced the subject of "everyone walking around the streets armed like it's Dodge City" into this discussion of health care. Nor have I ever taken the position that enacting CCW legislation in Ohio would result in dire consequences, which to my knowledge has never come to pass. Or hasn't the CCW legislation taken effect yet???
Perhaps I've not led as sheltered a life as you. Have you ever needed to go to an industrial warehouse on the South side of Chicago to pick a a valve, in broad daylight, for a repair that was stopping production of a coke plant (metallurgical coke)??? Can you understand that some people DO have to go into Dodge City??? Have you ever made a wrong turn near Christ Hospital (or even a correct turn, for that matter), or is THAT a place for thugs only, as well, in your view???
Have you ever been fortunate enough to win a handsome last-race exacta at Hollywood Park in the 1970s??? (Or are you even familiar with the area where Hollywood Park is located?) I'm sorry that my career, and some of my very legal and ethical life choices don't meet with your approval. I'll try to do better in the future. And I'll try to pass on to all of the working poor in America your advice regarding their choices of housing locations, and why folks shouldn't try to share a food basket with them until they move to a better heighborhood.
(I always suspected that all of those elderly widows in many of our poor neighborhoods were nothing but crack dealers!!! Thank you for spreading the word!!! Be sure to go to the next council meeting and publically state that EVERYONE in our bad neighborhoods are therefore themselves criminals. But you might want to be packing heat on your way to your car that night. Oops, wait...City Hall parking lot is very near the Police station!! Perhaps one of the 6 or 8 officers on duty that night will be able to walk you to your car if any of the REAL bad guys take exception to your bad-mouthing their mothers!!!)
Sorry, Bill, but many good people not only are forced by circumstances to travel to and through dangerous areas, but right here in our wonderful, bright Pollyannic town there are women, single mothers, and elderly that are justifiably afraid of standing outside their front doors...never mind in the alley behind their garages...anytime other than 8:00 am to 5:00 pm while the bad guys are sleeping.
I'm sorry if that offends you or if you find it unacceptable. I apologize...I should never have brought up "walking around the streets like it was Dodge City!!!" Wait!! I didn't, did I??? YOU did!!

I remember several real estate agents that were robbed and raped while showing empty homes. I know a few that started packing after these reports. |

Now that's a good point. Defense against sexual predators. It's the other stuff that I wouldn't carry for. As Mike pointed out, there are reasons, sometimes work reasons, you would find yourself in dangerous areas. I would still rather be unarmed and carry little to no money on me. If I'm packing heat, what good is coming out of that? Not much. Likely scenarios: I get surprised by a criminal and don't have time to pull out the gun, the guy sees my pulling mine out and shoots first, or we both get into shootout. I just tend to doubt there that many situations where a criminal approaches, you pull out the gun, and he wises up and runs away. It may happen occasionally but I think the chances for unintended disaster are greater.

Bill,,,"I don't get it" infers that it defies normal Logic. You don't get a Pass. It was derogatory in nature.
Why do those that "don't get it", seem to think that their view is the only rational one? I don't get THAT. |

Irisner, what is YOUR point? That no one on here can make a statement akin to "I don't get it", "I don't understand___", "I disagree with so and so"? Are we all supposed to agree otherwise the comment is "derogatory"? I've seen a lot more objectionable comments on here than what I said. Scratching my head as to what your probelm is......

What if there are two or three of us??? While the guy is watching you NOT pull out a gun, I can "screen" for the third guy long enough for him to SNEAK his out and plug the SOB!!!
Or, after he shoots YOU, I can plug him while you're falling and at least one of us lives. (He'll be watching you pulling your 2 or 3 dollars out of your pocket--never knowing that I'll be carrying enough to post bail. )
PS: At least the "blood in the streets" will be HIS blood!!!

Just fair ti Bill, for myself anyway, I have been a perturbed ever since Nancy Nix said she would be unable to take her Children to Public Parks with the CC Law in place as she would never know who was Armed and who was not.
To me, that is an asinine statement. Before CC she was oblivious to the Thugs armed Illegally and I guess that was all right. Just shows how stupid Politically motivated Comments can be. That may make me a bit impatient with the anti-CC people. |

This is typical of the thinking of irrational liberals such as Ms. Nix. She was perfectly comfortable taking her children to parks not knowing which of the rapists, thugs, robbers, gang-bangers, muggers or other dangerous, criminal-minded scofflaws might be there armed with surreptitiously (and usually illegally) obtained firearms.
But let an honest, law-abiding, upstanding citizen who has passed a firearms training class and become licensed by the government to legally carry a weapon for self-defense show up and, well, that is just too frightening a prospect to bear!!!
I’ll never be able to understand the way these narrow-minded folks think!!! |

Bill,
I carry everyday from the second I leave my house until I return. I don't go to dangerous areas of town. I live in a good neighborhood. Do I think I will ever have to pull my weapon? No, I don't. I hope I don't anyways. But read the national news EVERY DAY. You'll see people shot in churches, at their "normal" workplace (offices, factories, places in "good" parts of towns), shot at the local grocery, at the local diner, and elsewhere. Does it happen in Middletown often? Not really. But that's what every other person has said. Who wakes up and says, "Man, I bet a crazy guy is going to walk into my church today and shoot 12 people." Probably not many people. But you know what.... I'd rather be prepared. Like having AAA. Do I want my car to break down? Well, no but... And what is the downside the carrying? The gun is going to... jump out of its holster and shoot someone accidentally? Why *wouldn't* I want to carry? If there is no downside to something why not do it? |

You're right that a person CCW may be able to help in those situations where someone goes postal in a church or warehouse or, yep, post office. Not saying there are no situations where it would help. But I can easily see a downside. A situation that starts out small gets magnified once the weapons are pulled out, emotions are high, snap judgments are made. A situation that could have resulted in handing over a wallet turns into one where shots are fired and lives ruined. For every 5 sensible CCW folks (e.g., MUSA folks) there's someone who is a little too wired, a little too eager to be a hero. |

on a realted note, whatever the penalties are for criminals carrying illegal firearms, it apparently isn't enough. It's time to double the penalties. |

I'm glad you can see the reason for carrying, as you started this conversation saying you could see no reason for carrying. I agree, it is possible that someone will pull their weapon in a time when it is not justified. Fortunately, right now this happens less than 3 times a year in Ohio compared to the literally hundreds of times people are saved with CCW carriers (either themselves or others). If this starts happening more often, then perhaps more training/testing should be required before granting a CCW license but as it stands, it appears this isn't an issue.
And I agree 100% about harsher penalties; not just for carrying illegally, but for nearly every crime in America. Harsher penalties and rougher prisons and jails are needed before crime will ever be deterred in this country. |
