Basement Flooding

   Journal story- June 17- folks on Victoria Ave. had their basements flooded as a result of some hydrant flushing and pressure testing. Apparently a water main was broken causing the flooding.Ginger Smith  and the city says they're not liable which reminds us of the infamous "claims for damage caused by the city not maintaining the streets properly" situation, where, once again, the city said they are not responsible to pay. That's fine. Two can play that game. When November rolls around, and we're standing at the voting booth, looking at the .5% income tax levy for the streets, we can assume the same attitude of not being responsible for voting yes and giving them what they want for their streets. The city probably should rethink the responsibility thing if they ever want to receive the cooperation of the citizens. It has to be a two way agreement package, city people, if you want the cooperation of the people.

	I think the fact that only 2 people showed up last night to speak about The Road Tax speaks volumes. Bascially this Tax Levy is dead before it even gets voted on by Council.

	I agree, the roads are bad, taxes are badder. Badder? is that a word? Worser...

	The city not taking responsibility for the flooded basements in this case is rediculous. They were the ones flushing the hydrants, they were the ones that broke the water main, thus they were responsible. Nothing like making 2+2=5 huh?

	Well- Journal July 1- The city will now pay the difference in cost to repair the damage done by a city worker to Victoria Ave. basements. Ginger Smith, who NOW, has gone "beyond the call of duty"(according to today's article) originally said that the city was NOT LIABLE for the damage. It's a miracle!From goat to hero in just a few short months. How can a city official go from " it's not the city's problem or fault" to " we'll help you pay for it"? Think that there was some pressure from someone or a lawsuit against the city pending that made Ms. Smith change her tune? Classic example where the city tried to weasel their way out of paying for their mistake and was taken to task for it.Chalk one up for the people!

	Believe me - it had to have been the threat of a lawsuit to get the City to change its mind. This City is not know to be generous to its residents unless it benefits the City in someway. Bottom Line - it was probably cheaper to "help you pay for it" than to fight a law suit.
