   School board meeting with consultant

7:04 p.m.: Setting up for a less formal school board meeting. Barry Rowland from the search firm leading the superintendent search is here. No one here in the audience. 
7:10 p.m.: Problems with TV Middletown with the way the room is set up. No mic. Board says they don’t want this meeting broadcast. Katie McNeil is acting as the treasurer because treasurer isn’t here.
7:13 p.m.: Barry Rowland is introducing himself. He says he’s pleased to be here. Many things to discuss… or rather things for the board to be aware of. 
7:17: Rowland says he’ll have one-hour, interactive sessions with no more than 100 people to gather input. He questions whether everyone will be too busy in September, says maybe board should think about October for those dates.
7:27: Rowland: Questions you’ll be asked at focus sessions… In order to make Middletown City Schools the best district it can be, what should we do? What should we stop doing? What should we continue to do? …. What’s your answer?
8:05 p.m.: School board brainstorming who they want to get input from: Administrators, faculty, classified staff, central office staff, parents, volunteers, senior citizens, students, business community, city officials, ministers and nonprofits. 
8:14 p.m.: Does new superintendent need to a Ph.D.? Katie McNeil says yes; other board members not so sure. Tyus says they won’t get hung up on that; focus on what that person has done. Katie says experience and Ph.D. go together.
8:25 p.m.: Rowland: A lot of candidates will not seriously look until November because they are busy at the start of school.
8:27 p.m.: Rowland just passed out a timeline that I think says it will take the better part of the year to do the search. Looking at June/July start for new superintendent.
8:29 p.m.: Marcia Andrew says timing should be decided by the three board members whose seats are not up for election.
8:50 p.m.: Focus groups will happen either the week of Sept. 14 or Sept. 21.

	Board says they don’t want this meeting broadcast. I guess they can do that, its still a public meeting. But it does indeed look like they want to do business away from the public. Can we get the minutes from that meeting?

	It would be a public document so, yes, but you may have to file a "freedom of information act" request to obtain it.

	The Middletown Board of Education on Thursday, Aug. 6, began brainstorming to get answers to that question during its first meeting with search consulting firm Carney, Sandoe & Associates. The board agreed to invite administrators, faculty, staff, parents, volunteers, senior citizens, students, the business community, city officials, ministers and nonprofits to give their input as well. “It’s hard to pass an operating levy if we don’t have a spokesperson for our district,” said board member Marcia Andrew. Yea, right! Its also hard to pass a levy when the people don't like the person who is delivering the message. “The sooner we could get a permanent person on, the better it would make our job of selling a permanent tax levy,” said Marcia Andrew.

	Gee, levy talk from Andrew. Only time you hear from her is when she is writing one of her "stinging. scolding" letters to us heathens who "don't understand the needs of the school district" or ,as now, to suggest a PERMANENT levy. "The sooner we get a permanent person on, the better it will make our job of selling a permanent tax levy" NO Andrew, your damn job is to administer and guide the schools for the ultimate purpose of providing a quality education, living within your budget and not making the passage of multiple levies the number one priority. Is that all you board members, supers and education admin. think about? --- collecting more money to produce mediocre results year after year? Folks, Andrew and people like her have got to go away permanently. They are bad choices during election time for any positive change in this school system.

	With all the deceit that has been put forth by the school board on quality education and improvement I will NOT VOTE FOR another levy for this system. We built new schools to imoprove and better the education our children are to ge we still canm't get a excellent rating . Get back to the basics fo education and discipline in the schools a dress code that is strictly enforced . Trousers should be worn around the waist not their knees dresses should be knees lenth, shirts and Blouses with skirts. I think everyone can comply with these the code as you can wear jeans or slacks for young men young ladies could also wear their jean s etc. However it would also be up to parents to help enforce the proper wear of clothing at the school and the discipline at home.

	Great idea retired,but I think the first scream you'd hear is discrimination. I'm all for a school uniform policy that should be in place,they wouldn't need to go to extremes with it just enforce a more stringent dress code.

	I don't really advocate uniforms but a standard dress code that parents can afford . Shirts and jeans are fine for young men and the young ladies can have dresses, jeans and blouses or skirts and blouses. All of them should wear shoes no flipflops they don't have to be redwings a pair of sneakers or a casual shoe for all . They should all be dressed and ready to learn any tee shirts would have to be the school logo no outlandish statements etc. I think this would go a towards a lot better learning environment . This is a small discipline problem that starts by being addressed at Home . Problem students could be handeled by calling the parents at home 1st time 2nd time Saturday school with the Parent attending also 3rd time suspension . Our schools are not teaching the kids because they can't control them their hands are tied .Forget about being politically correct if you are disturbing the class you are the problem no matter what your ethnicity or sex.
