Real estate in Kerala is growing at an alarming rate. With the prices soaring the public prefers to go for living in apartments as purchasing land is getting out of reach for a middle class salaried person. A builder counts every bit of the space in his calculations and an average customer pays a big sum for every bit of it. There are some measures a builder can take to ensure that the space available in apartments though restricted can look comfortable. Common full height walls between living and dining areas can be broken down for greater visibility and connectivity. An open kitchen with modular fittings can be explored as an option to enhance space available. Small rooms can feel confining and uncomfortable. Light colored walls being more reflective will help to enhance the effect created by natural light. This does not necessarily mean settling for white walls. Painting trims and mouldings on either side in the same shade as the walls, and a lighter colour to go with it, will go a long way in making a room look spacious. It is a well known fact that in interior spaces, darker or shadowed objects appear further away. It is advisable that while choosing colour schemes one must go for soft and monochromatic shades. Use similar shades for big pieces of furniture and the walls. Always keep your ceiling lighter than the rest of the room. Glass-front or mirrored doors makes an area look spacious and uncluttered. Mirrored wardrobe doors or mirrors utilized in creative ways can make even the minutest of spaces seem larger. Other personal decisions such as the display of furniture items needs to be given a thought once you move in. Rotating them regularly by keeping some items in storage while displaying some others is advisable. |
