The teachers in Middletown are hoping the governor’s plan for education will have more creativity in the classrooms. Last week Governor Ted Strickland rolled out a plan for Ohio students that would change graduation requirements to take focus away from one standardized test and put it on innovation, collaboration and leadership.
With this proposal it would toss the Ohio Graduation Test in part for a four-part assessment that would require every student to take the ACT college entrance examination and to complete end-of-course exams and service learning and senior projects. The teachers at Middletown High School are supportive of the proposal and think it would bring more interactive activities to the classroom.
At Madison Local Schools the students have been doing a senior exit project with a community service e requirement since 1989. When they do that they complete and present a research project of their choice. These projects let the students leave high school with skills that help make them strong employees and strong community members.
Right now Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wyoming administer the college readiness test to all 11th grade public school students without a specific score requirement. Strickland believes having every student will encourage more students to pursue higher education.
