Middletown City School District Bond Issue
I am writing in support of Issue 7, the bond issue allowing the Middletown City School District to renovate or replace our community’s public elementary schools. It is my hope that all of the residents of Middletown will see the importance of Issue 7 as critical to the future of Middletown. As City Manager, my primary interest is to see that the city government operates well. Yet, I recognize that the local school system and the city are totally linked, and the support of our local school district is critical to the long-term health of our community. We need to think in terms of what is best for the total community, not just what is best for the “schools” or the “city” or any other segment of the community. We are all in this together, and what is good for one is good for the other. It has been repeatedly demonstrated that the City and the community as a whole cannot function well if we don’t have an excellent school system. Not only do our schools add to our quality of life by educating our children, they are a major factor in attracting business and new employment. New employment means more tax money for the City, which in turn means a greater ability to provide cost effective public services, adding to our community quality of life. In addition, Middletown’s children are also our community’s future workforce. They and their children are the ones who we will depend on to take care of us when we are old. I believe these are some of the observations that led the Middletown City Council to unanimously pass a resolution of support for Issue 7 this month. We can always find reasons for not supporting a levy. In this case, none of those reasons outweigh the need to provide facilities to properly educate our children. Our children and our community will benefit from the passage of Issue 7. Even in tough economic times, we need to support public education for the future of our community.
