Russian billionaire Victor Rashnikov, who controls Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works, known as MMK wants to build a mill in the US. Perhaps as close as AK Steel Ohio's back door.
A Russian news agency has reported that representatives of the third largest steel company in Russia, MMK, will travel to Ohio today, Sept. 17 , 2007 to meet with Gov. Ted Strickland.
The Ohio Director of the Ohio Department of Development, Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, plans to tour an Ohio River site near Portsmouth, Ohio with Govenor Strickland and Victor Rashnikov.
AK Steel fears that the State of Ohio will provide economic incentives to lure the plant to Ohio.
AKS Spokesperson Alan McCoy said in an interview, "...the state is helping subsidize [MMK] at the expense of existing companies and jobs."
McCoy would like to see the state, share incentives among new and existing companies. This story will be updated.
