Mid-Miami Valley Small Business Development Center Advised Award-Winning High School Team
Monday, July 28, 2003 2:49:42 PM - Middletown Ohio
Craig Maynard, Director of the Mid-Miami Valley Small Business Development Center, spent a week this summer serving as advisor to a team of 11 high school students who eventually won four awards.

Ohio Business Week Foundation sponsored the learning experience for 149 Ohio high school students selected from across Ohio.

During the intense week of business training held at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio, the students formed teams, invented a product, chose leaders, worked through the business plan process. financials and marketing and presented their work in a verbal and Power Point presentation before a panel of business professionals who judged their work.

The student team led by Maynard placed first in the print ad competition and won third place for their business plan. Their “company” had invented a voice activated TV remote system as their imaginary product and took it through the entire process from inception to market.

The SBDC’s eleven student team also went home with two of the three college scholarships awarded participants in the program.

Maynard usually works with adult business people as the director of the Small Business Development Center housed in the Mid-Miami Valley Chamber complex at 1500 Central Avenue. Area business people may seek free assistance when a new business is contemplated or expansion for an existing business is needed. Maynard often helps entrepreneurs do the same things these high school students were learning in a simulation of their business futures
